Remember when Cody used to take shots at WWE having an invisible wall? Lol, the days of any effort being put into their presentation are long gone. It’s sports entertainment tropes all the way.

No, it wasn’t. The issue is I like good stuff. 95% of AEW is bad. MJF and Brian Pillman, Jr. had a scorcher of a segment last week. Near perfection. I’ve actually rewatched it a few times to just marvel at the performances. I haven’t done that for an MJF promo since prior to his Moxley feud.

If something is good, I’ll say it’s good. It’s just that you can drive a truck through the logic gaps in this program. It rarely makes anyone look better than they already did or should have. The matches are repetitive white noise. The promos are way overrated. The commentary is awful. There are production mishaps all the time. And the show has this self-congratulatory attitude, like they truly believe that anything they do is golden.

I’ve said it before: Start up another promotion with the same resources and book it properly and it does way better than AEW. And the rats will jump from that ship in a second.

Sure. Bryan is over, which is a good start. Guru Dave Callis comes out, and while it’s sad that Cyrus is celebrated as a manager in 2021, he’s not bad at his job. His line about Bryan being a hippy millionaire was actually good. Can’t remember anything else he said. Bryan either had trouble remembering his lines or got lost. He’s doing that unnatural thing wrestlers do in AEW, which is swear to try and sound cool. Jericho does it too. Swearing, on its surface, is not cool on its own. It can make for lovely punctuation, but you have to be 12 to think that calling someone a “piece of shit” in 2021 is edgy.

Bryan does the Goldberg thing and basically pushes his claim to the belt to the side for...reasons. I’ve seen people defend this by saying “AEW isn’t WWE, they don’t hand out title shots!” Bullshit. This is straight out of WWE. They just did this. And Bryan will win the non-title match and get a title shot. Just. Like. WWE.

Instead of giving New York a WrestleMania-level moment they can remember forever and even earmark this as an annual event, they’re going to try and get the snarky crowd to will this forward by manufacturing this “dream match atmosphere.” You know, instead of actually creating drama and having a genuine emotional release.

The title can come into play later on if that's where AEW ends up going with Danielson/Omega. Though I'm having doubts that AEW will offer a rematch on the PPV after having the first encounter on TV, twice in a row after they did that with Christian and Omega. Full Gear will probably be Omega/Hangman, I presume.

Anyway.

One issue I'm having with Danielson so far is that I feel the crowd should be hotter for him than they are. Perhaps it's because of the knowledge we all had that he was coming in. Perhaps it's because Punk was so overwhelming for everyone just weeks before. But the biggest thing I'm noticing is that if Danielson came out and did his YES gesture that the fans would probably be in unison with him and chanting YES as loud as possible.

Without the YES he doesn't really have a chant for the crowd. In WWE it was DANIEL BRYAN clap clap clap clap clap or YES YES YES. So either the fans will get creative and come up with something new for him or AEW will direct them to something new somehow. But he needs that chant to get the reaction we all expect from him.

I do not foresee YOU'RE GONNA GET YOUR FUCKING HEAD KICKED IN chant to get back on the Danielson stage. Newark basically no sold The American Dragon mention last night.

I know Bryan said he didn't know if he was able to do the YES chant and gesture but I am quite certain he can. I just don't think he wants to, which is fine. I think that he could end up best used as a heel after this program with Omega. Most of his more interesting matches are actually with babyfaces so I think eventually he goes bad Bryan.
Bragging rights to find out who is the best is what a championship is for. That’s its literal purpose. If you are the two best wrestlers in the world, and one of you wins a match between you, that wrestler should be champion.

I’ve heard people say that Bryan shouldn’t walk into the company and get a title shot? Why not? Why promote him as a giant star and actually tell people he’s one of the best in the world if you’re going to make him climb this fictional ladder? Why put those obstacles in front of themselves?
