LOL I'll never understand people's need to downplay Bret Hart's achievements and success.
I'm very glad my two favorite wrestlers are HBK and Bret, so I don't have to talk shit about one just to make a point about the other one.

USA 6: I always think he had a solid fan base and liking, but really I never heard people overly rave about him like any other names. He kind of was a side note. It wasn't until he faced off with Austin and Shawn he kind of became more of "star." After he went to WCW his name faded and besides the Screw Job, most "everyday/casual" fans would just kind of go "oh yeah, him too...He was cool" if he was brought up.
Internationally I'm going with a 3: Just like Eklipse I have a very hard time finding non American/Canada fans that know who he is. The ones who do know him are hardcore wrestling fans and still most of them think he's shit and care little about him. The other thing is most of them are from Europe. I have never heard Bret's name every brought up when talking to Asian fans. I've been asked who I'm talking about many times. I think his popularity is a bit over rated.

And a "6" in the US, yet he had the best Main Event matches from like, 1992 to 1997, was a huge fan favorite, and won Vince's confidence to the point he was a 5-Time WWF Champion, along with the IC and Tag Team Titles.

I'd give him a solid 9 all around. Obviously not the huge pop culture icon like Hogan or Austin, but just a right below that, IMO. He did that on his wrestling skills alone too, which speaks volumes about how great he really was.

If WWE didn't believe that Austin was going to emerge as a legit main eventer, they wouldn't have let him feud with Bret Hart leading up to his return at Survivor Series 96. His KOTR 96 promo started all of that. I think his WM13 match with Bret indicated that not only is Austin a main eventer, but the whole company can be built around him.

I'm not denying that the KOTR promo helped Austin. It definitely did. But it didn't immediately put him over the way the WM13 with Bret Hart did. Right after winning the KOTR in June, WWE didn't really do much with Austin until September or so when the seeds for the Bret Hart feud were planted. Unless my memory is incorrect.
I'm just saying that the increase in Austin's overness from the start of WM13 to end of WM13 was a lot higher than the start of KOTR to the end of KOTR.

...that's because he turned babyface at the end of the match at the culmination of a slow burning feud. Before the match he was one of the WWE's top heels (winning the Royal Rumble 3 months earlier ring any bells?) He was calling Bret out/laying the groundwork as far back as September 1996, if not before that. The spark that gave him the platform/spot on the card to do that/thing that made "the office" think "hold on, we've got something here"? The KOTR promo is what launched Austin 3:16. The only reason that he remained the midcard was because of the WWE trying to go against what the fans wanted and making him a bad guy. I'm not trying to take anything away from Bret's remarkable contribution to wrestling but others have had a more telling part in the story of pro wrestling and that is why I ranked him at a 7.
