I believe the main difference is the manual, there is none (I'm positive you could find one on the internet if you really needed it). There may be differences in support, I'm not 100% sure on that.
But they're legal, they're mainly sold for computer makers. |

OEM is a pain in the ass when licensing, and if you install it on another PC etc. It's really only for PC companies to purchase. You'll prob have a mission of a time dealing with MS when re-re activating

so do you think OEM would be worth saving $$$ aside from a possible headache down the road

its exactly the same as the retail one, it's just licensed to be sold with hardware.

The reviews say that the OEM version means that if you fry the mobo, you have to replace the mobo with the exact same brand, otherwise it wouldn't be recognized by the OS. Is this true?

OEM versions are linked to the first motherboard you install it on. This means that you can't install Vista on another computer and you can't upgrade your motherboard without buying a new copy.
Doesn't matter what you replace it with, you need a new copy. |

Don't get Vista new, at least wait a month, not only will you get a slight price drop at some stores, you also avoid getting really poorly secured ones.

Just got Home Premium, and I love it. Visually it is 100000x times better, as far as other things, I hae't really played with it much yet.
And Just John, don't expect a price drop anytime soon. |

I just updated to Ultimate right now and I'm in the process of restoring all my old applications from XP. I love it right now. I've had Windowblinds as well for quite some time but I was still using XP Home and I wanted more control.
Also running Ubuntu as well which I love. To answer questions about the install, to upgrade, you run the CD from XP (or whatever version) and to install fresh you restart and boot from disk. It will search for previous versions and show any disks available. Then you have the choice, with partitions, to format a hard drive and start new. Then it installs itself. It really did most of the work itself which surprised me but it was very smooth. |

I didn't go with Ultimate yet, because of the anytime upgrade feature which is really cool. I will in a few weeks though i'm sure.

I'm using NOD32 for anti-virus, CCleaner for cleaning and register, Diskeeper 2007 Pro Premier for defragmenting.
Pretty much every program I was using on XP works with Vista. Here's a list of some of the popular programs that are compatible: http://www.iexbeta.com/wiki/index.ph...atibility_List |

I'm running 2000 on my work laptop, it's more than capable. That laptop is very job specific and could probably run on Windows 95, My point is 2000 has very given me a hint of troubles on it.
I run XP Pro at home (now) and on my main work PC, no complaints and I'm far from being the type of guy that would run out and buy the newest thing that comes out on the market. Nevermind that MS has had issues with new releases in the past, that even if I was the type to get the newest thing, their record would hold me back. However, from what I've heard so far, people that are running it, are liking it. |

I played around with laptops at Best Buy with Vista and I love the new design; it is very sleek. Too bad they weren't running the Ultimate version because I wanted to see the Aero thing in action

Gotta say yknow, getting a first edition of a new OS leaves you open to all of the bugs and holes that they're yet to discover, something I've just realised is that we've never had a first edition in our house! Call my father precacious

you can run aero in home premium too, not just ultimate, which some laptops do come pre loaded with it.

Picked up Home Premium yesterday. I guess I like it, the design is very cool, and I can still play WoW and BF2142 so that's the important part (although I had to figure out how to change permissions for BF2142 in order to play online.)
Only thing I don't like is that I can't listen to any of my purchased music from iTunes! |
