Can Master Regal do it?
Although William Regal has actively spoken about retiring from in-ring competition, and has been shifted into a role as an announcer on NXT (whilst getting practice calling matches in FCW), Master Regal recently posted the following on Twitter:
"Trying to think if Teddy Long owes me a favour.I need to get a World Championship match on Smackdown on Liverpool. Maybe the last chance I have of becoming the first English World Champion in front of WWE's loyalist fans. Some people are saying I'm passed it.Maybe so but @WWE,look at it as charity.Give an old rogue a chance." Do you think the Gentleman Villain has got any shot whatsoever at achieving this? It seemed that back in 2008, Regal was all set for a monster push as a main event heel -- serving as the tyrannical General Manager of RAW and winning the 2008 King of the Ring. But a second wellness suspension completely ruined those plans, and who else is there really to blame but Regal? That being said -- Regal's last suspension was three years ago, and Regal has proven to be an entertaining and valuable asset to the WWE -- perhaps even for life. Triple H is reportedly said to be a huge fan of the man, and Regal has had no problems helping to create new stars in the past. Would becoming the first British World Heavyweight Champion in history be a befitting end to the career of Master Regal? Does the man deserve it (as far as one can deserve being given a top prize in the company)? Has he already had his "thank you" title run, when he won the Intercontinental Title from Santino Marella when the WWE went over to England a couple of years back? Regal's Twitter is, of course, flooded with comments about how he should be given the chance to win the World Heavyweight Title. Many are getting themselves wet over the idea of William Regal vs. Daniel Bryan for the World Heavyweight Title at WrestleMania XXVIII. That's not something I considered, even for a competitor as respected as Regal; but what's really stopping the WWE there? Regal and Bryan would have a tremendous match, which is what the WWE would want out of a Bryan match at WrestleMania -- and it would make a tremendous WrestleMania moment. The prime option, in my mind, was Orton vs. Bryan -- which may do more to solidify Bryan, granted -- but won't have the same emotional story behind it. The WWE will be touring England again in November, which is around the time of Survivor Series -- which is where I could see them giving Regal a nice little run, without really stepping on anyone else's toes. But does it have any shot of happening? Pfft |

An Orton/Regal match on SmackDown when they are in England would be great to see, but I think it's too late for him to actually win. Even Flair couldn't get one last hurrah as World Champion before he left WWE.

I'm hoping to get tickets to that show. If a Regal championship match is on the show I would love it.

Regal is better in the ring, than most of the current roster, and on the stick, he's top 5.
I really hope he gets the belt before he retires. |

It wouldn't kill them to make him a transitional champ while they're over in Merry Olde.
Hell, here we go... Orton beats Christian, is champ. T-Long announces a ten man battle royal for the number one spot. Through cunning (read: cheating) Regal wins. Orton vs. Regal, where Christian does a run in and costs Orton the match because he knows he can beat Regal. Suddenly, Regal is WHC. Over the next month or so (building to the next PPV), Orton keeps beating Regal but can't win clean. (Regal walks out mid-match, blatant DQ, etc... typical heel schtick.) So Christian gets his title shot, and when Regal walks out, Orton throws him back in the ring. We then get Christian as a champ, and Orton gets his match there again. And in playing title round-about, Master Regal gets his little title run. |

I remember back in 2008 he had a great match with Orton for the title, and the crowd definitely helped. I'd really like to see a re-match, but as for winning the Championship, I don't think he's got a realistic chance. But like others said, ya never know.

He is a man's man and even Orton can't stop that! Regal will win the belt then lose it to Barrett and then he can lose it to Sheamus and he can lose it to Drew McIntyre and he can lose it to Mason Ryan so the whole British isles are covered. Book that now!

All Regal needs to do is ask for a match with a smirk on his face, pleading a "one more shot for an old hat" case, and then completely cheat Orton out of the belt with Regal heel brilliance.

In your opinion. Which you're entitled to.
I think it would get received quite well myself. The crowd were wetting themselves over the thought of Jerry Lawler winning a few months back. All it takes is a bit of a back story to get people interested. |

I personally think he deserves it and can make a hell of a run with it, if allowed.
But he wouldn't be allowed. If he were to get the title, it would be a fluke, and he would lose it on TV without ever having a PPV match with it. WWE will never let Regal run with the belt. I have serious doubts they see him as a guy who can draw for them. And honestly, I don't think he can outside of the UK at this point. I'm obviously talking with WWE's current view and booking style. With the right environment, Regal could be a draw and main event. But not in WWE. He will never be allowed a real chance to do it. |

I don't want to see anyone get a run with the belt that does not currently deserve it. We have had enough of these "Here is the belt since you were a loyal employee for X amount of year" runs. He had his chance, he blew it.

... only to be interrupted by Wade Barrett, who calls his win something along the lines of "a fluke and a sham", and that he should have been the first truly British champion. He presses Regal and challenges him for the title. Think about it. If this "one more run" thing were to happen, as much as Regal heels it up, he would be a face. In his climb, he can have his match with Danielson everyone is salivating over, and can put on great matches with others on the roster as well. The announce team can put over what Regal is trying to do. He gets a few wins and gets himself in position to enter a title match. Triple threat or something. Hell, he even wins by Power of the Punch and pinning the champion after the other guy hit his finisher on the champ. Regal will still get a pop, much like Eddie did using heel tactics while being clearly over as a face. He gets an ovation, celebrates like a crying ninny, and all is right with the world. Then, back the showdown with Barrett I started with. Barrett wins it by out-cheating Regal, of course, but only after putting on one hell of a match. Being a transitional champion both as a "thank you" and as a stepping-stone to elevate someone to that next level in an angle that pretty much writes itself isn't really that bad of a way to go out. (Thanks for messing that up, Ruien. I had to go and do all the work of quoting Schlomey for the transition to make sense.) |

I would love to see this happen. Hell, if someone like John Bradshaw Layfield can go from being a career-long, mid-to-lower card tag specialist in a team that rarely held the WWE Tag Team Championships to headlining WrestleMania as the WWE Champion against John Cena, then why the hell couldn't someone like William Regal, who is just as good a talker as JBL was and a FAR better worker, do the same thing?
What happened with JBL was that the company got behind the man and pushed him to the moon. Maybe it was a sympathy thank-you push for being Vince's "enforcer" for so long, but what the fuck, the thing worked, and JBL became a legitimate main eventer (even if I hated his run with a passion). If the WWE creative machine got behind Regal and treated him as a threatening figure to the World Heavyweight Title division, which frankly isn't that strong right now, then I think it would certainly work. |

Thinking about it again, if Swagger can do it and if they'll push Mark Henry: Why the fuck not? Give it to him. He deserves it. He could be the Heel they need for Randy to face.

I think Henry would be a great champion, but I don't think that WWE will do it at this stage of his career. JBL yes, but JBL is high up with management as far as I can tell.

No. He blew his big chance with the wellness violation when they pushed him to the moon, even having his character turning off the Raw feed.
He was as ready as he ever was to be Champion then and I have no doubt that he would have been. Such a shame that we didn't get to see that or the brewing Trips/Evil GM Regal feud. Would have been amazing ![]() |

Even if Regal wins the title in England and then loses it when he returnes to the States, it'll still be a great story, and certainly wouldn't hurt the credibility of the title. Regal would still be employed by the WWE as an announcer, and he's apparently signed through until 2014. |

The ONE TIME WWE seemed to open up to him, and push him, he pissed away the opportunity with the Drug Violation and susbsequent suspension.
So, no...I don't think it'll ever happen. It's like in life, you only get one opportunity at some things, one shot. You make the most out of it, awesome. You don't, too bad. |
