Think about it. If this "one more run" thing were to happen, as much as Regal heels it up, he would be a face. In his climb, he can have his match with Danielson everyone is salivating over, and can put on great matches with others on the roster as well. The announce team can put over what Regal is trying to do. He gets a few wins and gets himself in position to enter a title match. Triple threat or something. Hell, he even wins by Power of the Punch and pinning the champion after the other guy hit his finisher on the champ. Regal will still get a pop, much like Eddie did using heel tactics while being clearly over as a face. He gets an ovation, celebrates like a crying ninny, and all is right with the world.

Then, back the showdown with Barrett I started with. Barrett wins it by out-cheating Regal, of course, but only after putting on one hell of a match.

Being a transitional champion both as a "thank you" and as a stepping-stone to elevate someone to that next level in an angle that pretty much writes itself isn't really that bad of a way to go out.

(Thanks for messing that up, Ruien. I had to go and do all the work of quoting Schlomey for the transition to make sense.)
