Memory Card Error on a digital camera

I was just taking pictures with this Canon digital camera and all of a sudden the lens view screen said Memory Card Error on it. I tried taking the card out and reinsertin it but that didn't work and I'm fresh out of ideas. Anyone have any suggestions?
