It didn't strike me so much as a "similarity" as much as it seems like WWE decided to "rip off" Punk and act like it was a new character idea they just thought up. That happens a lot in a business where everything old is new again (like the afore mentioned Bray Wyatt), but sometimes it's a little too soon and a little too similar.

It would be like if, say, Sydal came in for his trial match, but instead of being changed to Evan Bourne, they gave him a name like Jett Hershey and have him parade around in dayglow facepaint and still be a high-flying spot-monkey... about the same time as Jeff Hardy was feuding with Punk. Matt Sydal looks nothing like Jeff, but the gimmick would be too similar too soon.
