The first encounter: Holy Shit!
This was their first match together. What I really love about this match is the striking exchange in the middle of the match. Josh Mathews and Bill DeMott give it the respect it deserves by being silent. Paul London's head bump in this is sick, too. Josh Mathews sells it honestly and accurately. Anyone that calls these two spot-monkeys can pretty much be disproved by the way they manage to build the tension of this match. It really sucks you in, and the spots are used exclusively as puncuation. The Second Encounter: Akio Time The belly-to-belly overhead suplex into the corner in this match is pretty sweet. London bumps like a bitch to put over the intensity of their matches. Akio looks like a real asshole for jumping on the neck London sells in both this and the previous match. Also, props to Paul London for the awesome slide across the ring. That was some Billy Gunn stuff. Also, the corkscrew moonsault press looks pretty sick. The Third Encounter: Land of the Rising Smark (Penis) The longest of their matches. What I really love here is the build, and how Akio manages to really distinguish himself as a heel here. They also play off the respect earned in the last match, but not in a cheesy way, rather a "oh, this shit is still going" way. The bump London takes into the ring steps looks really sick, too. Not sure if the sound effects were editted in or not, but either way...fuck yeah. I think this is also the match that features the necktie submission countered into a necktie submission spot. The Fourth Encounter: Return of Akio's Black Pants -- Now With Extra Chavo Guerrero Chavo Guerrero shows a bit of personality on commentary. The story here isn't so much their rivalry, as much as it is London's chase for the Cruiserweight Title, but it's another lesser seen match between the two. Chemistry like this between two wrestlers is pretty rare. Especially so low on the card. |
