Guitar Hero: Van Halen

Activision finally confirms Guitar Hero: Van Halen

by David Hinkle { 52 minutes ago }

Those Van Halen boys are likely happy today, as it marks the end of their need for silence regarding their long-rumored video game: Guitar Hero: Van Halen. Activision has confirmed to Joystiq that the title is in development and will release sometime during the second half of this year. Activision could not confirm any songs, and only said the game will contain Van Halen's "greatest hits," as well as guest acts such as Queen, Weezer, blink-182, The Offspring, Queens of the Stone Age, and more.

We've put in word to Activision to clarify if the game will be all David Lee Roth, or if fans will also get some Sammy Hagar and some Gary Cherone love. Well, okay, maybe not Gary Cherone. Nobody liked that guy.

I know we already knew about it, but here's to speculation on the guest acts.

Rumor: Activision considering Guitar Hero TV show, tour

by Richard Mitchell { 1 hour ago }

Brace yourselves. As the headline makes abundantly clear, Activision may be considering turning Guitar Hero into a television show -- a reality TV show, as rumor has it. Furthermore, the company is looking at creating a concert tour based on the series as well. According to Reuters, Activision CEO Robert Kotick acknowledged the rumor prior to the company's Q1 earnings call, saying, "It might make for a good TV show or a good concert tour."

Another rumor floating around -- about which Kotick declined to comment -- is that Activision is also prepping a film adaptation of the Call of Duty franchise. Call of Duty just might actually make a good movie, as Hollywood already has a general template for decent war movies. The only question: Would the film be based on a Treyarch-developed Call of Duty, or one developed by Infinity Ward? Flame war: Commence.

come onnnnnnnn

The only Call of Duty movie I'd see would have to be based on Modern Warfare.

Also, who would pay to see a concert with people playing fake instruments?

If that was true, newer titles would stop selling more than the previous installments.

Ok, so go ahead and tell me that GH: Aerosmith sold more than any of the previous titles or that GH: Metallica will outsell all of those before it

Its not a matter of the series not being good anymore (though I personally don't think it is) its a matter of there not being a shred of originality to it at this point

This is what happened with DDR. People didn't stop liking DDR because it got bad, people stopped playing it because it was the same damn thing over again

The Guitar Hero series (IMO, of course) started declining after 2. One was good but not great - I don't think all of the tracks were original recordings. The 2nd most of them were and they had some lesser known band as unlockables that were solid. 3 is when Activision took over and complied the most boring, uninteresting set list possible. Sure, it had some classics, but the main demographic for GH is probably 9 - 21 or so. Putting on songs from 1977 isn't a waste but when you go into Gamestop and see that lined up and Rock Band next to it with Nirvana, Foo Fighters and whatnot on it, its not hard to see what that age group will choose. And don't try to say that the over 40 crowd comprises any sizable percentage of 360/PS3 owners.

I just think either make something new and exceiting over it or let it go, which they wont since Activision is going to run it into the ground

BTW, I'm 22 and about 85% of the music I listen to was made during or before 1977.

and GH has just as many relatively recent hits as Rock Band does.

Yes. Video gamers crave originality. That's why you can put Mario in a virtually identical adventure and make a million bucks off of it.

Honestly, the problem seems to be more the frequency than the originality.

The Guitar Hero series (IMO, of course) started declining after 2. One was good but not great - I don't think all of the tracks were original recordings.
I'm pretty sure none of the main setlist were originals.

Almost 100%.

GH2 had like, four songs that weren't covers.

Half of GH3's main setlist were covers.

If you liked 2, with all its covers, don't complain about 1.

Quote:
3 is when Activision took over and complied the most boring, uninteresting set list possible. Sure, it had some classics, but the main demographic for GH is probably 9 - 21 or so. Putting on songs from 1977 isn't a waste but when you go into Gamestop and see that lined up and Rock Band next to it with Nirvana, Foo Fighters and whatnot on it, its not hard to see what that age group will choose. And don't try to say that the over 40 crowd comprises any sizable percentage of 360/PS3 owners.
Wadding covered the setlist breakdown, but I mean, really. Come on. Rock Band had plenty of old songs. Paint it Black? Green Grass and high tides? Paranoid? And are we going to pretend that Paranoid isn't still popular with youth? Train Kept A rollin'?

You're talking on a case by case basis. For me, I got bored with the series at 3, was mad when my girlfriend's sister got me GH: Aerosmith for my birthday and cringed when my g/f got me World Tour on 360 for Christmas. Some still play the newer versions and enjoy it. Me? Meh.

I misspoke there. I didn't think it was inferior due to covers vs originals. I thought 2 wasbetter because the track list was more varied IMO. It makes sense though, who figured Guitar Hero would take off the way it did? You make the first game and put stuff in there that you know will draw attention, Megadeth, Boston, etc. You sold a bunch of copies and you have a following, now with 2, you take more risks (Hello Dethklok)

Again, case by case basis. I side with you and Wadding in that I do listen to more older music than newer stuff (I feel like music today isn't really about anything and I HATE the radio) but I don't know that there's any real way for either of us to say which older songs are popular with today's youth. It depends on too many different things. We can agree that Paint It Black is popular with today youth and then find areas where that type of music isn't listened to. I follow what you're saying but music as a whole is probably too varied to label what is and isn't. How would you measure popularity? I tunes sales? As opposed to other download methods? CD sales? I'm only saying its a tough thing to measure in that context.

I'm talking the gaming community as a whole. Mostly because they're the consumers, and what you or I are doing really doesn't mean much. The number of people who really want even new content are limited. Sorely.

Dethklok was a bonus song, and there were almost as many bonus songs in GH as GH2. Your point still seems ridiculous. did you know Acro-Brats or Din when GH1 came out? No? Same applies here. The bonus tracks in 2 actually went more mainstream, by the way. The Neighborhoods had some level of natuional attention....Though people did think they were a new band....

Otherwise, the makeup of the tracks was NOT that different. Most of the GH1 and 2 bonus songs were from bands Harmonix members were in.

I didn't say anything about what I liked, because I was talking about the breakdown Wadding provided, which demonsstrates neither series is really more about older songs despite your claims.

Though if we're being honest, I'd rather see a lot of older music they haven't covered. But that wasn't the point. There was a ton of old music along with Nirvana and whatever.

And no, I think there are much better methods for judging popularity, but if you're going to go that route, you nullify your own argument.

Are you done cutting off your nose to spite your face?

BTW, I love Semi-Charmed life, but it doesn't strike me as a very challenging song for a rhythm game. Maybe fun, but in GHVH?

From joystiq.com:

Activision's Senior Vice President of Global Brand Management (whew!) told us, "Oh this is definitely Van Halen, not Van Hagar," which is a plus since David Lee Roth is back with the band and they just finished a successful tour.

Jump for Guitar Hero: Van Halen's full track list

by David Hinkle { Aug 5th 2009 at 5:56PM }

Activision finally got around to confirming Guitar Hero: Van Halen in May and, while our question regarding which singer will be featured in the game has been answered, the featured tracks and release date have been a mystery ... until now! MTV Multiplayer managed to get the info straight from Activision and, if you're a Van Halen fan, we're fairly certain you won't be disappointed with the selections. Essential tracks like "Jump" and "Ain't Talkin' Bout Love" have made the cut, along with a few of Eddie's scorching solos. In keeping with the Guitar Hero spin-off tradition, there will also be some music from bands other than Van Halen in the game, so head past the break for the full list of finger-bleeding tunes.

Additionally, Guitar Hero: Van Halen has been dated for release on December 22.
