Perfect through 7 but Buerhle just gave up a hit. To bad that would have been amazing if he could have done that again.

Fucking Papelbon just blew the save though, granted it with some errors but still. He has really been off this year - I think that's why Bard wouldn't be included in any trades this year. If Papelbon continues to lack the dominance needed I think in a year or two Bard could end up being the closer. |

Somebody mentioned it to me before the season and I was like "what? no way" but I dunno, I mean Papelbon still made the all star team so I'm not freaking out like a typical Boston fan but still. They still haven't offered Papelbon a long term deal yet, he's starting to struggle a bit and Bard is a future closer at some point - whether it's in Boston or not I don't know. It could happen

I don't think him making the all-star team is of any real relavance. Don't see why it would be since it's voted on by fans, he plays in a huge market, and he's a colorful character. Anyways, he's been way off. It's been noticable for a while (not just overracting to tonight). I think he might just be the type of closer that dominates for a while, but hitters begin to figure him out. It really is quite common. The shelf-life for a dominant closer is very short, unless you're a legend who can be lights out for more than a few years. Been jokingly calling him Crapelbon for a few months now. Even on the nights he gets the save, he usually gives up some hits and/or walks the bases loaded. Then he fights back and gets the outs, or he doesn't. Either way I don't think his saves column tells the whole story. They're definitely catching up to him. He's still an effective closer compared to most, so I'm not gonna completely throw him under the bus. Just sayin... |

Just gonna throw something out there. I think the future of Papelbon in the ongoing saga of the Red Sox will be pretty interesting either way.
He's the type of guy who I can see really reacting badly to a collapse. Not saying it will happen, but in the event that things started to go south for him, he would probably start spazzing on the fans, media, and team. Definitely a headcase like Manny, or Jimmy Piersall, but a bit more intense. If he keeps his position as one of the premiere closers in the game, he will be valuable when his contract comes up. With Bard, and others, his value to the Red Sox might not be what it is to other teams. Several of his own teamates have even made reference to their belief that Papelbon will go wherever offers him the most money. Period. Interesting, considering the Yankees could very well be that team, in the market for a new closer when Mariano Rivera hangs it up. He's a beast, but he can't go forever. So Papelbon goes insane in Boston, or ends up going to the Yankees and fueling the flame of the Sox/Yanks rivalry? I don't think it's that cut and dry. Other things can happen, but I can really see one of those scenarios happening. |

Pretty sure only the starting 9 get voted in by the fans, not pitchers. Pitchers are chosen by the manager I think, usually meaning they are pretty deserving (most of the time) and not influenced by market or anything like that. So that's why I brought it up

Chien-Ming Wang is done for the year. And quite possibly, and sadly, his time with the Yankees.
![]() I really hope they give him one more chance. But the denizens of the Empire gave up on him at the beginning of the season. |

Well. I'm not to afraid. Since Toronto didn't approve of it yet.
Halladay pitches tonight so unless he gets yanked before the game or during the game I am not worried. Think about this should the Yankees try to trade for him they'd be forced to give up Jackson, Hughes/Joba, etc. I think this would just be a wake up call for Philly and they'll just say "Fuck it" and give Toronto Drabek etc.. I would be quite pleased if he goes to Philly. Boston is not going to give up Bard not with Papelbon losing some of his stuff. If Papelbon at some point has to be traded Bard will probably end up being the closer and I don't see Boston trading him. Last edited by Hardkore Kidd J; 07-29-2009 at 10:18 AM. |

Why get him when we just paid $80 mil. for his counterpart? We might as well be called the New York Blue Jays instead of the Yankees. What we do need is an extra bullpen arm to take some pressure off Ace, Coke, Hughes, and Mo. Bruney still got some rust he gotta shake off, Melancon needs to prove himself, Robertson can be hit or miss and Albaladejo has been on the SWB shuttle more times than we can count this year. Get me Scott Downs or Chad Qualls before friday, and I'll be a happy camper. |

With Wang done for the season we need someone like Washburn or something to even out the rotation. Petitte Joba/Hughes CC Burnett Mitre I don't think is good enough. We need someone a bit more reliable then Mitre if we want to go all the way. |

Pirates and Mariners pull off a big 7-player deal.
Jack Wilson and Ian Snell go to Seattle for Ronny Cedeno, Aaron Pribanic, Jeff Clement, Brett Lorin and Nathan Adcock. Pirates are also sending over some cash. |

Crap. Phils were already way ahead in the division...I think getting Lee might seal it. What I wouldn't pay to see them pull a collapse of Mets proportions.
Good thing the wild card is still wide open. |

Wow, just days after Jeff Wilpon said Omar was going to remain the GM...he told one reporter that he's actually "this" close to being out of baseball while holding his thumb and index finger one a half-inch apart.
My guess is that if the Mets make a miracle run and get into the playoffs, he stays...otherwise, they can him and go in another direction. |

Man, now the Pirates have NO drawing power AGAIN!
At least it was fun to go see decent players like Jumpin' Jack and Clubby, but now there's really only the park to go see, and I've been there enough. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I'm sick and fucking tired of "building for the future." How about instead of worrying about the farm system, we try making the PIRATES good. |
