Yea no doubt. The 2005 remake was incredible. But it was remade in 1976 as well. Either way, the remake came along way later when film had changed enough that remaking the movie had some value storywise, and not just financially.
There was a lot more you could do with King Kong 70 years later.

There's no point in remaking Jaws or Back to the Future at this stage in the game.

I think the majority of those horror movies were just reactionary to the success of the Texas Chainsaw remake.
After that, they rebooted everything, but I really do feel it's pointless. It was just a trend, but I think it's become evident that the horror genre fans would turn out for the latest Jason, Freddy or Myers movie regardless of whether it's a reboot or a sequel.
The same goes for just about anything they remake.

Most of the reboots have been poorly recieved and are unlikely to see anymore sequels either. Paramount restarded Friday the 13th, and has cancelled development of a sequel and has no plans to make anymore right now. In retrospect, making sequels and just taking things in a new direction may have been a smarter move, not just creatively but financially as well.

I was glad to see them make a true sequel instead of reboot Predator, and they're doing prequels for Alien.
It's obvious that you can "reboot" a popular franchise without starting over.
