Gonna come right out and say I think Garth Ennis is a tad bit overrated. Don't get me wrong, he creates some great stories, and I enjoy his stuff overall. I just don't see him as the brilliant mastermind most others do. I just think he tries too hard to be shocking and gruesome. I've always been of the opinion that extremely viloent or shocking scenes are much better, and have much more impact if used sparsely, and built up properly. Good example being what happened to one of the avengers in seige.(Not going to say who for spoilers sake, but you know what I'm talking about if you read it.) Fucking 7 or 8 issues into Preacher and The Boys, and you're already desensitized to it. What's the fucking point?

Also, I feel like Ennis just preaches(no pun intended) too much about his beliefs and morals. Yeah every writer puts their own beliefs and theologies in their stories, but at least they are subtle about it. Ennis is about as subtle as a brick to the head, and he spends SOOOO much time talking about it. It's like alright I get it, let's get back to the story, asshole.

That's why I feel Punisher was his best work. He had to pull it back a bit on the graphic nature of his work since it was Marvel, and he was dealing with a character who already had an established personality and set of beliefs, so he couldn't crowd up the dialogue with all that kind of crap.

Probably not a popular opinion, but there you go.

I don't like how the superheroes and mutants are shown in his stories.

I mean in The Punisher series. Spider-Man's always been this joke-cracking, happy fella and all, but making Daredevil and (especially) Wolverine a comic relief? Now that's just stupid.
