I don't hate Blitzball, btw. Just hear people bitch about it ALL THE FUCKING TIME. It's not THAT bad.
Part of what poisoned it for me was that it was one of the first major RPGs with voiceovers. Not sure if it was the first, don't care. Voiceovers, especially in those days, meant more linearity and less character options. These days, we're getting a little multipathign back, but not much. on top of it being voiced, the voices were awful and the characters were terrible. Not every FF game was full of winners, but you could mitigate their badness by not having to listen to them. Voiceovers for a shitty haracter just highlight the shittiness.
Plus, the world seemed less spectacular. I don't know, FFVII for all its flaws, wowed us with FMV for the first time in a FF game, maybe an RPG in general on that scale. It wasn't JUST the fact that it was pretty advanced visually for the time, it was the sense of scope. And X lacked that.

Might I ask what you didn't like about FF7, that you thought was flawed. Not looking to start an argument, merely asking your opinion.
