I'd don't hate Cole as much as many people do, its more the voice in his ear telling him scream "The Big Dog" than Cole himself I believe. Without the Vince birdie in his ear and Cole "doing what he wanted," I think the commentary would be much better....

everyone blames the office for literally everything they dont like...funny how they never credit the office for anything done well though.

I think in this case it's a pretty fair criticism, though. There's a pretty marked difference between Cole on Raw/PPV and Cole on the MYC or like the UK special. It also probably doesn't help that on Raw/PPV he also has to plug/promote 4085283 things beyond the gimmicks/nicknames/catchphrases.

I'm just waiting for the day when both shows return to a commentary team that consists of a duo but I know I'll be waiting a hell of a long time for that.
Having a trio at the table is just awkward and too "busy". It wasn't until I started watching Raw & SmackDown from 2002 on the network that I really noticed the big difference in quality. A duo is so much more easier to listen to and you're not bombarded with multiple voices shouting over each other like what usually ends up happening with a trio. |

Whatever soup is being poured into Cole's ear on Raw/PPV is bad. Whatever soup is getting poured into his ear on side specials is good. I'm not sure that there's a great way to condense that down pithily. |

Was he good as in good-good, or just good as in "it is refreshing to hear anything more organic than usual." What people say about the "WWE style" of commentators is very true, but I don't think Destor is actually completely off the mark. People have a tendency to overrate the performers when they feel that the office has had some negative influence.
Michael Cole sucked in 1999. He sucked in 2000. He sucked in 2001. He got a lot better with Paul Heyman producing him 2002, but not by much. He has always sort of sucked. He sucks more now and we feel sorry for him, because we know that he's told to say certain things and drive home the WWE party lines. But another thing to consider is this: Vince McMahon has always had something to do with commentary. JR had to put up with this, Jerry Lawler had to put up with this, Bobby Heenan would have had to put up with it. Or, if they didn't, then it's because Vince felt like he didn't need to do that. And by now, that's part of the art. You're a puppet at Vince McMahon's show. You're going to have to use verbiage that comes from him. The art is now in making it seem like it isn't your own, which Cole can't do very well at all. A great commentator in modern WWE should be able to put their own flare into it and deliver the information in a way that satisfies the communicative needs of the job, but is also entertaining. When the commentary sucks, I do think it is a cop-out to blame Vince McMahon and Kevin Dunn. I don't agree with them on commentary philosophically, so I think it would get better if someone else took it over, but I don't think it'll get as good as people think, because you are clearly dealing with individuals that are limited anyway. |
