I'm pretty sure McCarty is still around? I don't know though. Kevin Youklis (SP?) has also been working at 1st base in the off-season.

Well yeah Youk is making the team (obviously) as the back up 3rd baseman. I'm assuming both of them will be on the club, but could be a situation like last year when they got Doug M and McCarty rode the pine hardcore. McCarty could spit on my grave and I would still like him though, just because he was a member of the 2004 World Series Champion Red Sox.

There are some bright spots though, hopefully Russ Adams can get some experience and become the future SS. I dunno, if Adams, Rios, Hinske and Hudson can all get better and if Bush and Towers can live up to their potential then the Jays could be decent in 2006. Ricardi was given an extra 20 million for the roster which will probably come more into effect next season after they've evaluated these younger guys though. I'm still not totally getting why they traded Cash. He struggled offensively but they invested so much in him. And Zaun doesn't impress me much |

I think people are putting too much into the Jays getting Corey Koskie. He does end the season with good numbers usually, but he isn't the kind of player to carry a team offensively, he just kind of does stuff. He is obviously a better player then Michael Cuddyer, but I think the Twins might be better off now because Cuddyer will be consistantly average instead of completely awful for a week and then pretty solid the next.

ESPN has him signed to a 1yr minor league contract, which gets him a spring training invite.
I know there was talk the sox wanted to keep/pay him because when he's done playing the sox want to be first in line to offer him a coaching job (I'd assume he'd start as a minor league hitting instructor or possible base coach). |

I read this comment a couple days ago on Yahoo (about what Trot Nixon had to say about A-Rod)
Boston's outfielder praised Rodriguez's playing ability but said New York's third baseman wasn't the ``Yankee type.'' ``I don't look at him as that. He might be in a lot of people's eyes,'' Nixon said. ``He's done some great things on the field. He's one of the best baseball players in the game and probably will be when it's all said and done. ``But when people ask me about the Yankees, I tell them about (Derek) Jeter and Bernie Williams and (Jorge) Posada. I don't tell them about Rodriguez. ... He can't stand up to Jeter in my book or Bernie Williams or Posada.'' So with that in mind, because he's only been a Yankee for one full year, that means he's not a Yankee? So i guess under the same guidelines that Trot uses, that means Shilling isn't a 'Red Sox' right? I never really get why athletes (either side) run their mouth's about other player's. It just motivates the other to perform better. Fueling someone's fire is something i would avoid at all cost's. It just gives the other team or player added motivation. |

Yeah everybody has been shitting on A-Rod because of his stupid comment about his workouts. Did you see what he said? It was hilarious. "While guys are sleeping or bringing their kids to school I'm working out"

Trot was on the radio today, said reading what he said, didn't sound like how he meant it.
Wells is going to bitch about the Yanks. Schill will say some things. I think the rest of the team will keep their mouth shut, they've seen how the Pats do it. |

Everyone in the MLB works out, thats thier job. All you do is play baseball, you should be working out. What else are you going to do?
This A-Rod/Sox thing is just something to keep us busy during spring training. It all started with that slap back in the ALCS. A-Rod called Bronso Arroyo Brendan the other day too. He knows his name is Bronso he was just trying to be a dick. Now Millar is getting involded saying A-Rod isn't like the rest of the Yankees. Should be intresting since the Sox players really are just "attacking" A-Rod and not saying anything about the rest of the Yankee players. |

A. That quote was taken completely out of context and blown up by ESPN
B. Most fans would tell you, more then any other team, the Yankees have a certain image. The Bronx Bombers, the winners. A-Rod has been there one year and hasn't won, so in a lot of peoples minds he doesn't fit that image. C. Curt Schilling came to the Red Sox, won a World Series in a dramatic fashion with the Red Sox, and immersed himself in the Red Sox culture from the start. Its not just an issue on years, Curt Schilling is a true Red Sock now. D. Personally, I think that A-Rod fits the Yankee image. He really is the most high profile player in the league, highest paid and everything, so I think it makes perfect sense that he plays in New York. Also his lifestyle fits New York much more then it did in Texas. If A-Rod can get over the humps and get over in New York he will go down in history as an all time Yankee great. E. VEL likes bikes |

Ok, that being said, Wells had some valid issues, he didn't like when A-rod got there he kept saying "We won championships" as wells put it "He didn't win crap, and somehow thought by putting on the pinstrips the rings were retroactive or something" Aperantly during the ALCS A-rod had scored, and Sheffield was coming around and it wasn't a close play at all, Sheffield slid and Arod was screaming at him to take out V-Teck. This aperently pissed of Sheffield who felt it would have been dirty, and the Sox players who are protective of their captin, and this has carried over into this season. |

Has he even been in a WS? I'm not taking anything away from him as a player, one of the best 5tools in the league, but does that make you a good team player? Arroyo played against him in HS, said everyone was in awe of him cause he was like 6'4 in HS and already a great player, but said he remembered a game where Arod told and ump to tell the plate ump "We usually get those calls" and Arroyo was suprised to hear a HS kid say that. That being said, Arroyo told the story, but also said he was a fan of Arods, and they dropped the 2nd part and printed that Arroyo hasn't liked Arod since high school. Gotta love the press. There talking RJ may start 3 times in the yanks first 8 games, so he faces the sox twice. Also, why is the media killing Giambi but not Sheffield? Are they really buying the "I didn't know the cream I put on my knee was a roid" crap? |

I know that Jeter is a great player and can do a good job in the leadoff spot, but wouldn't it make sense for them to go find one of the true leadoff type guys and let Jeter hit in the two hole where he belongs. Look at what guys like Johnny Damon, Shannon Stewart, Ichiro, Juan Pierre, do for a team.

Where exactly in the field is this true lead off guy going to play?
He gets on base though, and with the Yankees line up you just need to get on base and you will get knocked in more likely then not. They had a "true" lead off guy with Lawfton (sp?) and they barely used him in the leadoff spot. |

You're right that Jeter does a good job there, but if he batted second he would be a lot more effective. Really they have a lot of positions where they could find a good guy, first, second, catcher, center field, and DH are all average. The Yankees were completely based around their top 4 last season. Granted there aren't a lot of guys that would be worth them picking up to lead off, but its kind of stupid that they keep trying to add to their cluttered middle lineup. Chuck Knoblauch wasn't the best player, but he did a lot for the Yankees while he was there, and since he has been gone the lack of a true leadoff hitter has hurt them.

Isn't Womack going to lead off this year?
Sporting News projects that it'll be: Womack Jeter Arod Sheffield Matsui Posada Giambi Williams Sierra |

Did they sign Womack?? I knew he was off the Cards but for some reason I thought he signed with the Cubs or the Reds or something. If they have Womack I think it will completely change the makeup of their team. Even though he isn't nearly as good as Jeter, A-Rod, Sheffield, or Matsui, his presence makes their batting that much better because they can go 5 deep now. I wonder what happens at first base, if Giambi has no power I don't see why you would use him at first over Tino. I would assume after the first 5 it goes: Posada, Tino, Williams, Sierra

I think Womack can do exactly what they need him too though. Look at the Cardinals last season, if their batting order started with Renteria instead of Womack, then Rolen, Edmonds, and Pujols would have been moved up in the order and everything would have been very different. Having a guy who can get on base before having your best players hits makes all of your best players very effective, at least in my opinion. Does that make sense what I am saying? I get the impression that I am not explaining myself.

I think a lot of people say he isn't a winner because after he was traded from the Rangers they became playoff contenders. Anybody could have been playing 3rd for the Yankees and they still would have been winning

Personally, I am not going to make a prediction but it really wouldn't surprise me if the Red Sox don't make the playoffs this year. I think they rely too much on guys who just aren't that good, like Millar and Mueller. I think they would have been better off keeping Cabrera and not signing Renteria, and even though their pitching may be deeper in 3-5, 1-2 won't be as strong even if Schilling comes back full. They very well could win the World Series again, but they remind me a lot of this years Timberwolves. You do great, but then bring back all of the breakout players, some with new contracts, and they just don't live up.
That being said, unlike in the past few years, I think the Yankee's now have a complete lineup and easilly the best team in baseball. Their five starters are unmatched, and now that they have a real second baseman and real leadoff hitter their lineup is complete now, instead of #2, #4, #4, #5, #9, #7, #8, #8, #9. On paper, the Yankees are amazing, and unlike years in the past I think they have their team built right this year. |
