LC I respect you as you know, but what are you talking about over time?
Even if he continued drawing decently, which is all he really did throughout his run, it'd take him more and more years to draw like Piper did in just the 80's alone. Piper is one of the 3 major reasons why WM is as big as it is right now. And even over time, what does that mean? Piper was the clear bigger draw in the 80's...then he left for a time. Savage wasnt drawing HUGE in this time. He was one of a few top heels. Every time Piper came back he was a major player. And by the time Piper had his last major feud with Hogan in the mid 90's..Savage was also winding down. Piper is the bigger draw, the bigger name and the bigger star. |

Savage was a subjective pick for me. A good case could be made for either of them.

you know I respect your opinion too man. And like I said from the start, this matchup is extremely close
When I say drawing power, I take into account the kind of programs said wrestler worked overtime. Obviously, there's no number we can look at, but here's how I broke it down between Piper and Savage. Piper in '85 and '86 was on the top of the wreslting world. Definately was a huge part in the success of Mania and Mania II. Then after this, he stepped away and never again returned to the top of the WWF (he did have that brief program with Adonis, but it wasn't a huge one). He was midcard from 87-92 when he did wrestle. He always worked great storylines/feuds, but not main programs. In WCW, he had that one run at Starrcade and Uncensored with Hogan and then worked midcard/upper midcard whenever he did wrestle later on With Savage, from Wrestlemania 3 on, he kept rising and rising. Won the belt at Mania 4 and carried it until Mania 5. He still worked the main event up until about 1990. He would go back down a little until 1991, where he worked tremendous top programs with Warrior and Roberts. Then he moved back into the World Title picture with Flair and won the title again. That was pretty much it for Savage until WCW, where he worked a lot of main events along with babyface Hogan. He won the WCW Title in 95 and feuded with Flair for a while until the nWo. Again he worked main events with heel Hogan and did great business. Then he worked midcard-upper midcard feuds until his World Title run again in 98. So, to sum up a point, Savage worked a lot more main programs then Piper did and was almost always around from 87-98. If he took time off, it was for announcing (WWF) or for an injury. But obviously, WWF and WCW felt like he could carry main programs and thus put him on the top of the card numerous times. Piper had that one main run in 85/86 and then a short one in late 1996-early 1997. That's why I give in to Savage. Last edited by Loose Cannon; 02-10-2010 at 07:49 PM. |
