Yeah fan voting is pretty bad in all sports, but this baseball one seems to be really awful. You can blame the promotional departments of the teams though, have been advertising the all star voting a lot (Well I can speak for the Red Sox anyways) If I was MLB I'd just lie and say they were was a fan vote and not even count them

We do that shit at the store I work at, we get these "Give aways" from Budweiser, like Jerseys, Snowboards, Grills, all types of shit. Never even give them away though, I just laugh at people when they fill out the little form.

Josh Towers is doing really good in AAA and he'll be called up for Chacin's spot. The JAys have also called up a pair of bullpen guys since they've been using their bullpen a ton as of late.

Well Red Sox top prospect Lester did kinda what I expected him to do. Only gave up 3 earned, but could only get through 4.1 innings after throwing 100 pitches. Not really surprised since he has had some control issues in the minors and has always seemed to throw a lot of pitches to get guys out. Not bad for his first start in the majors though

I swear.... once the switch happens in the AL Central.... there is no looking back.
Tigers are hanging on by the skin of their teeth now. Hey Toronto, do me a favor will ya? Finish these fuckers off. Bad enough I have to root for the Cubs next weekend. |

Why are you comparing Ortiz to Thomas? A 30-year-old in the prime of both his natural and chemical career vs. a 40-year-old 10 years past his prime?
And I cannot believe that there are still people other than Joe Morgan that don't realize this, but it does not matter what your batting average is if you get on-base at the rate that those sluggers do. But if you want a nice .303 hitter like Pudge Rodriguez (.336 on-base) over a guy hitting in the .230-.260 range with a .360-.380 OBP, be my guest. |

And for $500,000 (not a typo), Thomas has provided 16 home runs, an OBP of .352, and a slugging percentage of .525. He puts up these numbers in the cleanup spot where he provides protection for Eric Chavez, who for the first time in his 8-year MLB career is getting off to a great start (.362/.518, 13 homers). He has single-handedly carried the A's the last month while Chavez and Swisher came back to earth and the rest of the team still couldn't hit.
If only he could get that average up. |

Twins dropped the ball when they let Thomas go, those numbers would have fit in perfectly with us, and it would have been a hot-point when we play the Sox. Meh, at least we got Rondell White!

wow. a 6 run ninth and we get the winning run on deck after being down 10-2. a loss is still a loss... but if that doesn't jump start this offense, nothing will.

The only thing, Miz about your post is this. An Ortiz or a Thomas are not signed to draw walks. They're there to put the ball in play with power. Don't get me wrong, as you are correct... certain type of players excluded.
We could debate the finer points of this if you like, but you know what I'm saying. |

What do you expect them to do when pitchers don't throw them strikes? There are two types of hitters that draw alot of walks, the big sluggers who are feared by the pitchers (Bonds, Pujols, Ramirez, Giambi, etc.) and the guys who have amazing plate discipline and will gladly take 1st if the pitcher doesn't throw them something they can drive (BGiles, Hatteberg, Youkilis, NJohnson, etc.). Thomas was signed to hit home runs and drive in runs, you are right. And he's doing that, 16 homers and 37 RBI. But what's great is when he isn't hitting the ball out or driving in runs, he's getting on base. And getting on base is never a bad thing no matter how big and slow you are.
If Thomas was getting on base at a great rate but not hitting with lots of power, I would agree with you completely. He was signed to hit home runs. But he's doing both things very well and that's why he's been extremely valuable. |

You're right Miz, but i wasn't comparing them so much as having a pop at Thomas, but not a particularly serious one seeing as i like the guy.

Know what's funny, the Twins easily could have traded for Thome or Blalock last summer or else signed Thomas. We are such cheap asses, we have pitchers galore in the minors, some who will be ready to pitch in the Majors real soon but we wouldn't trade Lohse or Baker.

I was making a general statement, not picking on anyone in particular. It only came up by me now, because it was topical. It seems to me, we agree on this point and have simply gone into finer detail about it.

!!!!!
I was just reading the newspaper and I got to the end where they have the lines. I usually check just to see what the Twins are, and I was kind of surprised because we had the line over the Red Sox. Going to the game, I got excited because I figured Johan must be pitching, but then I find out not only is he pitching, but against Schilling! I've seen Johan pitch three times I think, but never against such strong competition. Looking forward to tonight. That's my story. Last edited by BCWWF; 06-13-2006 at 05:01 PM. |

I've always been curious as to why they're called pitching matchups, when you can't really pitch against another pitcher (apart from at bats obviously)...I dunno i'm a nitpicker

Fixed. I had Clemons in my mind because he is the biggest pitcher I've seen (long time ago when he was w/ the Red Sox). My bad. Still pumped.

Ya they've been talking about a Hillenbrand for Kennedy trade for a while, especially after the Jays moved Russ Adams to the minors and moved Aaron Hill to SS. Adams just got called back up and is starting at second. They arent going to give up on him but Im sure they would send him back to AAA if he struggles some more.
I guess if Hillenbrand is traded we'd have Hinske as our regular DH which is pretty bleh |
