Batting Average
Hafner: .306 Thome: .298 Ortiz: .291 On Base Percentage Hafner: .430 Thome: .416 Ortiz: .395 Slugging Percentage Hafner: .641 Thome: .627 Ortiz: .627 On Base + Slugging Percentage Hafner: 1.071 Thome: 1.044 Ortiz: 1.022 Doubles: Hafner: 24 Ortiz: 21 Thome: 15 Strikeouts: Hafner: 89 Ortiz: 90 Thome: 105 --------------------------------------- Therefore, based only on individual batting statistics that are minimally affected by teammates, Travis Hafner is overwhelmingly the best hitter in the American League this season. --------------------------------------- Runs Batted In Ortiz: 108 Hafner: 94 Thome: 83 Runs: Oritz: 83 Hafner: 81 Thome: 81 --------------------------------------- The statistics that are directly correlated to teammates, and also the ones that are probably most noteworthy among MVP voters, are very, very even among the three. --------------------------------------- Average White Sox: .286 Red Sox: .283 Indians: .283 Runs Batted In White Sox: 597 Red Sox: 575 Indians: 568 --------------------------------------- These stats, as well as most others, show that offensively speaking, both the Red Sox and the White Sox have a better all-around offense. --------------------------------------- So, is there any other reason why Hafner should not be the unanimous MVP other than the fact that his team is not in contention? |

I find the MVP a bit confusing tbh, its supposed to be the most valuable player but i dunno. For example:
One season Manny Ramirez has a monster year: 50 HR, 150 RBI, .340 BA etc, Red Sox win the AL east by a good 10 games... BUT the line-up is fantastic from 1-9, defensively they're solid, the pitching staff is fantastic, great rotation and bullpen. In otherwords they've had the total package and probably would've been right up there contending with another outfielder instead of Manny. Vernon Wells goes 40 HR, 120 RBI, .320 and does a gold-glove job in Center. The team is solid, they've had a few problems getting reliable 4th and 5th starters and their usual #2 and #5 guys have been injured for most of the season. The Jays end up about 11 games back of Boston and just get edged out of the wildcard on the last day. Who gets the MVP? I obviously say Wells, but Manny would get it purely for the massive numbers and 1st place finish. Last edited by ct2k; 08-06-2006 at 05:10 PM. |

Hafner just doesn't get the love that Ortiz does, despite being better. It's not fair, but I feel like Ortiz is almost a lock for AL MVP.

Hafner is also on one of the worst teams in the AL.
Also, 2 game lead ![]() ![]() |

If you take his WinEx number (win expectation): 5.56 and subtract from that the Leveraged MLV (Marginal Lineup Value) Wins: 1.79, you get a "clutch" score of 3.77 Meaning that, over his career, he accounted for almost 4 more wins per season for his team. All just by being able to hit in the late innings. There... "clutch" by the numbers. |

Ortiz will win the MVP this year primarily because of the fact he lost it last year. Oh and his numbers are awesome again.

His WHIP is 1.48. Chico, a 23-year-old lefty, was a third-rounder after flunking out of Palomar (Calif.) JC in 2003. After bombing in Double-A last year, he has bounced back with a strong 2006. In 23 starts between high Class A Lancaster and Tennessee, he has gone 10-6, 2.81. He also has a 112-32 K-BB ratio in 131 innings and has held hitters to a .222 average and 11 homers. Chico can hit 94 mph on the radar gun but pitches better in the low 90s. He also throws an average curveball and a changeup. 1.09 WHIP. http://www.baseballamerica.com/today...ws/262123.html Last edited by DaveWadding; 08-07-2006 at 03:59 PM. |

Dunno much about the Comeback award but if its fan voting Beltran will probably win.
Gotta question the Renteria nomination though. Any asshole can suck in Boston and then do great in the NL |

I never knew that MLB nominates people. That is kind of fucked up in my opinion, just like "Hey Edgar, you sucked last year for no reason, but now you're doing fine." Like it is one thing for a guy like Nomar, because he is coming back from an injury plagues two years, not a bad season. And like Jason Giambi, how they would nominate him? WTF

Well atleast I saw one win in person, also fucking Javy Lopez hitting into a double play to end the game with the bases loaded =
![]() It was cowbell night on Friday and only way you could get one for free was if you had a Tampa Bay shirt on. I thought it was a pretty cool idea at first since they where trying to counter all the Red Sox fans there but it got pretty annoying after like 3 innings. I had a pretty good time there, it can't even touch Fenway atmosphere wise but I thought it was still pretty good. Watching the game in the dome looks lot better than it does on TV as well, so that was good. Got to sit in seats that would be 80 bucks in Fenway for 35, can't really complain. BCWWF you were so wrong about not wanting to witness a game there, it was pretty nice. Plus I don't really blame them for having a dome now, it rained everyday for like an hour. That'd probably get pretty annoying have 1 hour rain delays like every single game. Last edited by Jesus Shuttlesworth; 02-26-2007 at 08:51 PM. |

Thome and Beltran for me. If Nomahhhh managed to stay off the DL I think I'd give it to him over Beltran but yeah. Beltran deserves it after rebounding off of a Reggie Sanders type of season.

Really, I want to say that they are lucky, that they get the breaks, that they are going to break down, that the loss was because of our mistakes, but I just can't. Everytime we lose to the Tigers, I have to acknowledge that they are one helluva good baseball team. Taking more than one game against Detroit is nearly impossible. I can't even say these things about the White Sox of last year, I really don't think they were as good.

Looks like Liriano might be out for a while. That delivery was bound to mess him up at some point. Now Matt Garza, who started the year in A, is our hope for another decent pitcher.
