Who did the most with the least?
With all the talk of ECW recently, and people mentioning how Heyman did so much with so little, it got me wondering:

Which wrestlers do you feel got the most out of themselves with the least natural "talent." Now, I don't mean got the most over, but who had a possibly subpar skillset, but really became more than the sum of their parts.

ECW guy that really seems to fit this mold for me is Tommy Dreamer. Not a physically gifted guy, nor is he very naturally charismatic, but the guy always busted ass and really became a very solid hand.

I'm curious to see what you guys come up with, as I'm not the biggest historian of the business and can't speak to guys pre-1995 or so.

Mick Foley. By his own admission the guy isn't technically gifted or athletic, but was somehow able to become WWE champion on the basis of being able to take a good bump. His mic skills aren't too shabby either.

Hulk Hogan


Unlike other legends like Flair, Hogan is known for being the face of wrestling...not for his technical prowess. He sucks. Always has. But he is a smart man who jumped on the train at the right time. He is a good talker, had a great look for the period & the fact that he had 18 inch pythons and said his prayers didn't hurt. But yeah, he wrestled about as well as a guy like Nash. A standard set of moves and the rest was overdone fluff. He was blessed with the natural charisma necessary to become the Hulking Up flexoid we have seen for the last 30 years.

Most with the least? Lex fucking Luger. The guy sucked a fat one on the mic and had it not been for his physique would have been gone quickly. He oversold like a mother fucker and had a move set that consisted of clotheslines, a military press, power slam, and torture rack.

Goldberg - the guy gained fame by not selling anything. He gave off the intense look by not speaking, thank god, but his matches were less than great and had it not been for the defeated streak....never would've cared for him.

i don't have a real answer for this, but foley would definitley not be it. he came from a wrestling and lacrosse background, so the argument that he wasn't athletic is shit. cactus jack was his creation so he wasn't given anything as far as that's concerned. and when he showed up in wwf he had a great character to work with and was put into a program with taker off the bat. he had A LOT to work with, and did so expertly.

If he had just started today he wouldn't make it anywhere.

I'd go with Lex Luger for sure. He had nothing except the look. He was terrible on the mic, terrible in the ring, and just a bland character overall. At least Goldberg actually played his character well and although his matches were never great, he still knew how to hit the big power spots. Luger was just bad but somehow got insanely over in WCW as one of the main guys against the nWo.

There's been some fantastic one's in here...Hogan, Warrior, Goldberg...I agree.

Just throwing some British names in there...Shirley "Big Daddy" Crabtree and Giant Haystacks made a living off being large, and not much else. Big Daddy could talk, but that was about it.
