Hall of Fame Hats
Was reading about Andre Dawson earlier and it got me thinking. When these guys retire(d) and maybe go into the HoF, what cap should they don?

I'll have to actually look at the numbers to figure some of these out...but offhand I'll say Randy Johnson definitely as a Diamondback, I'd be shocked if he went in as a Mariner. Clemens also definitely as a member of the Red Sox, whether he likes it or not.
And I'm somewhat biased of course, but I think Piazza will definitely go in as a Met. He was better as a Dodger, but only slightly. He played longer, hit most of his power milestones, and had his most memorable moments as a Met and is regarded as the best hitter in their history. Also, from what I can tell, players are still allowed to voice their preference and the Committee takes it into heavy consideration if it's close. Piazza will definitely ask to go in as a Met. |

I didn't research my selections, but that is where I remember him the most so that's what I put.
That said, after researching, he spent 17 years in Major League Baseball and the only place he spent more than three years was Toronto, where he spent five. He was also an all-star, gold glove and silver slugger winner during all three years in Cleveland, and top-4 in MVP voting twice (No. 3 in 1999). According to baseball-reference.com, the highest he ever finished in MVP voting elsewhere was 6 in Toronto, and 22 in Baltimore. So looking at his statistics, it's clear now that Toronto would probably make sense based on longevity, but he was as productive as he ever was when he played for Cleveland, so I'm not sure what you're so bothered about. |

He is one of the weird cases, because while he was great there, won two World Series, and stayed there the longest of anywhere, when you play for five different teams, four of them for about 3-5 years each, it's hard to really identify him with any of them.
Statistically he was probably at his best with the Indians, but (and I was too young to pay attention at the time) he probably is best identified with the Blue Jays. Again, I didn't pay much attention to baseball until about 2000. |

Makes sense. I'm a diehard Jays fan, and I couldn't fathom Alomar not going in as a Jay.

I'm pretty sure he'd go as a Red Sox... rings don't make the career and most of his stats were with the Sox... heck, you could probably make an argument of blue jays > yankees.
That said, Clemens has said he wanted to go in as a Yankee but the players have no say... I believe it was Boggs who rumor was the Rays offered him Money to have a Rays hat and I think Winfield might have even offered his up to multiple teams for money that had the HOF change the policy and not let the players pick the hat. |

Actually, I've read that while the Hall does get the final decision...players are at least asked about preferences. Usually the player's wish will be honored if it's deemed close enough.

Case in point, Andre Dawson asked to go in as a Cub...but the Hall vetoed it and are putting him in as an Expo. It makes sense, because it's really not even close.
