PC4200 DDR2 SoDIMM vs. DDR SDRAM

ok, looking into a new laptop.

have it narrowed down to 2.

there's a $200.00 difference between them.

1 has 512MB of PC4200 DDR2 SoDIMM

the other has 1GB of DDR SDRAM.

It's the lesser expensive one that has the 1GB of DDR.

So, is their something special about the PC4200 stuff, or am I ok going with the DD2 especially where it's 1GB?

the 2 laptops are about the same, the only real difference I see is the more expensive one has 64MB DDR SDRAM (dedicated) the other has 128MB (shared).

I know dedicated is better, but where I don't plan on doing a lot of graphics or games, I figure I should be fine.

spend the extra money, it'll be worth it.
What make/model laptops are you looking at?

That's normally my thought also, however in the case I'm not sure.

I'm looking at 2 Toshiba's.

I'll just list the diffrences.

S105-S1133 vs. M55-S3293 ($200.00 less)

Speed: 1.73GHz 1.86Ghz

Display: (1024 x 768) (1280x768)

Screen Size: 14.1" 14"

Ram: 512MB 1GB

Type of Ram: PC4200 DDR2 SoDIMM v. DDR SDRAM

HD Type: Serial ATA 5400rpm EIDE ATA-6 (5400 rpm)

DVD-ROM/CD-RW Double-layer DVD±RW/CD-RW

Vcard: NVIDIA GeForce Go 6200 TE V.

Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 900

Video Memory: 64MB DDR SDRAM (dedicated) V. Up to 128MB (shared)

10Base-T/100Base-TX/1000Base-T Gigabit Ethernet LAN V. 10/100Base-TX Ethernet LAN

S-video: None 1
AD1981B integrated software sound V. Realtek ALC250 16-bit stereo

Speakers: Built-in stereo V. Built-in Harman/Kardon stereo

USB 2.0: 2 ports V. 4 ports

and the more expesnive one is about 1# lighter, the demensions are about the same (one is 1" wider the other is 1" longer).

So, it seems to me, except the memory type and the video memory type, the lesser expensive one seems to be a better laptop.

Faster, more USB's, more memory, better speakers, better video card...

dunno, am I missing something on why one it's $200.00 less?

the SATA drive spanks the EIDE Drive
the Nvidia video walks all over the Intel. Not even a match.
Dedicated Video Memory is better than shared.
The DVD Dual layer writer is better
You wont notice the Processor difference.
Get 1gb of ram both ways, you wont regret it.
The first one probably has a better CPU, even though its slower. It'll have better power consumption etc.

i think some of it wasn't seperated.

one comes with 1GB the other 512KB but it's different types so I'm not sure if that makes a difference.

I do like the idea of 4 USB's, If I get this, I'm probably going to use it as my main computer, and when at my desk use my monitor, keyboard and keep all my personal stuff on a USB HD I have (120GB) and keep all my work stuff on the laptop.

here's 2 links. actually found a 3rd option around the same price range and it's a 2ghz w/ 1GB ram
