in linux less gay than windows?
my computer keeps fucking up in various strange ways and i've had to reformat it about 4 times in the past few months. i can't really afford to buy a new computer because i'm saving to go plow my loins into deadman inc sometime later this year. so yes. help the mask out

Trouble is... Linux is open source, therefore there are 43576456089 flavours of it out there. It's got several definite advantages over windows, but the problem is that not enough people use it to be able to ask for help without going to some Linux site where they will treat you like a complete noob and make you forsake Bill Gates and anything remotely associated wit Microsoft before you get anything resembling an answer to your question.

That's a bit over dramatic, don't you think? Many Linux users are practical and understand that Windows must co-exist with Linux until newbies get their feet wet. And if you pick a non-obscure distribution (like Fedora), this isn't the case at all.

As for there being "43576456089 flavours", that's mostly true. However, for a newbie there are only a few good options -- Fedora, Ubuntu, OpenSuSE.. and maybe one or two more. Fedora is the most widely used and thus has the best online support. Ubuntu is gaining a lot of popularity and tries to make things very simple for the end users. OpenSuSE is.. well.. if you want to use it, just try it out -- I'm not fan.

As for Linux being gay or not... It's never tried to fuck me in the ass, though I've secretly longed for it. So... I guess it's probably not gay.

Linux requires some computer know-how if you want to get anything useful done. Since you seem to be having problems keeping your XP system working right, you probably have more to learn.

However, once you become leet enough, dual-booting is the way to go. Best of both worlds.

well my problem is more that xp explodes in the middle of the night for no good reason and then i wake up to scrape together the remains.

The core of XP is reasonably stable (at least compared to past versions of Windows). So I doubt it is that.

Do all the standard spyware/antivirus checking etc. Also make a list of programs that are running when the computer has problems. Then turn them off one by one until you find the culprit.

well the last time it was bitcomet, and i only had the computer on cause of that.

i kept clicking off on the error message cause it was making a really loud error noise over and over in the middle of the night, and in the end i had to turn the computer off, and it went tits up from there. im totally free of viruses and such.
