i installed a 2nd hard drive, and it is spinning, but how the hell do i make my

computer read it? i don't know much about this, but i plugged in the cable that was attached to my 1st drive, which has a 2nd plug, and i can feel it spinning and all but when i go to my computer it is not listed. wtf do i need to do

Try...

Start Button > type "device manager" and hit enter > scan for new hardware

Could also check and see if the drive is listed there before scanning. If not, scan and it should be added.

no it is not there

i even tried in the disk management part under right click computer > manage....it's not even listed

is there anything i need to download and install?

you need to make sure that the pins on the new hard drive are set to Slave or CS (Cable Select). The computer can't read 2 hard drives that are set as a master.

i think i need another sata cable to plug into it. the reason why it runs is because the cable that had two attachments was a power cable? when i unplugged the sata cable from my primary hd it froze, so i figured i need that. also, i do not have any plugs to set it as a slave drive. i'm going to go talk to a guy at circuit city, so hopefully i will be all set with a cable and perhaps some pins.

Mine came with the proper cable. But, I also had to boot up the second HD with a copy of Windows XP on it. Dunno why, but it worked.

ok apparently circuit city nor officemax carry sata cables, which is gay. also i got the drive with zero cables and nothing else. just the drive.

after doing research on wd's website, i do in fact need the sata data cable for it to work. the cable that powers it is the sata power cable, which my computer had the 2nd link for it which is why it runs and what have you. also, dunno about the whole master/slave jink, but neither drive has the plugs to pin it with. so hopefully i don't get fucked for that.

ok here is what went down. my 2nd drive is up and running, the 2nd sata drive was disabled in bios for some odd reason. anyways, all is good.
