Programs launching at start up

My computer is starting to start up slowly nowadays, nothing major, but could be a minute before the computer stops "thinking".

I want to try and turn off as many programs as possible that start up automatically, to see if that helps, but cant find a list where I can choose which programs I want and what I dont want launching in the system tray

I've tried going through each one individually but not all of them have options to turn off their launch/icons in system tray.

Any ideas? Using XP btw.

Start > Run > "msconfig" > Startup tab (far right) > best thing to do is disable all

Another thing you might try while you're there is going to the services tab, check "Hide All Microsoft Services" and then disable all.

(Note: this may cause some programs to stop working correctly such as antiviruses. Just be careful what you turn off.)

Yeah, be careful with that. Probably better to go through a utilities program like System Mechanic 6 (or are they on 7 now?) or TuneUp Utilites 2006, since they don't list any vital OS shits in the program.

You can also try CCleaner, it does that plus a lot of other stuff.

Yeah, both of the programs I mentioned are like that too. Comprehensive shits that handle just about everything.

As long as you hide all Microsoft services in the service tab, you can turn off all of it without ruining anything.

For me, it's better to turn off everything at startup and just load programs separately so that when I have to restart and don't need to run any of it, I don't have to worry about 5+ programs starting.

All I keep running at startup are NOD32 and GAIM. Both quick loads so it doesn't bother me.

You know that both of those programs let you disable automatic start up in their options, right?

I assumed this topic was more about things like adobe gamma loader or MS works and other such useless background shits.
