The perfect time to have Regal return to in-ring competition, would have been that night John Cena attacked him, explaining his suspension. All you had to do was have a backstage promo air, with Regal being interviewed.

Todd: Ah, Mr. Regal, you were attacked by John Cena on RAW a few weeks back, and we have not seen you since, how are you holding up?

Regal: Very good, you miserable little toe-rag, but as you can tell I'm none too happy. John Cena, I was just doing my job. I thought I was doing you a favour by giving you Randy Orton's head on a silver platter, but you obviously care more about being WWE Champion than you do your father! Because there is no other explanation for your attacking me as you did! You were afraid of Randy Orton. I've been around, I can practically smell it. But sunshine, you don't know true fear. See, when you attacked me my hands were trapped in my jacket, but Cena, the next time I see you I won't be wearing a jacket.
