Do you take Danica Patrick seriously?
I do. I'm kind of a closet NASCAR and Indy Car fan. I go to the Brickyard and Indy500 every year and have a great time. I think its a huge deal the Danica Patrick, a female, won a Indy Car race. Thats a huge break through in my mind. Right up there with Jackie Robinson and baseball.
What do you think? It dont matter who did what to who at this point. The fact is, we went to war. And now there aint no going back. It's what war is you know? Once you're in it, you're in it. If it's a lie, then we fight on that lie, but we gotta fight! |

That would kinda require that I took Nascar seriously, so that's no.
But good for her tho, I guess. She can turn left faster than most dudes. |

I don't follow racing very much, other then the fact, I give my sister a hard time for being a die-hard Jimmy Johnson Fan, a man who had a capterpillar eyebrow.
Honestly however, I don't take her seriously, am I proud that she was able to win the Indy 500, Sure..more power to her, She just needs to become a more constant and successful driver for me to take her seriously however. |

You have to take someone who won a race seriously.
But Scott Dixon is the man. |

No, not at all. I will only take this kind of breakthrough seriously if she stops trying to get it across that she is a woman and she is trying to do something different. If she had come into racing and just shut up and raced, then that would be cool, but she is too busy making sure everyone knows she is a woman and posing in Maxim magazine,

id take her seriously. Seeing that she is in a male dominated sport, and she is doing well, so to me, she is worth taking seriously. She won her first race within 75 race starts, in a sport where a man can race for years, 150+ races and NEVER win, so the fact that she has won has to say something about her skill.

I take her seriously as a competitor, but I hardly think she will ever be a champion. Also, I am a huge NASCAR fan. I don't have memorabilia or anything, but I will sit and watch races. My uncle has season passes to a couple raceways that he goes to every single time they have a big race at them. I'd love to go to a race.
I have a favorite driver, but I am not really anti-other drivers unless they are huge douches. Like Kyle Busch. I think he is a huge douche and I hate when he wins races. I grew up loving Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Jr. is easily my favorite. But I still love when guys like Stewart or Gordon win. Like today's race at Talladega, I was just as happy that Stewart finally won his first Talladega race even though I was sure Jr. was going to take him in the last few laps. Big Hendrick's team fan. And yes, I consider racing a sport. Really hoping that after Franchitti gets some experience driving the NASCAR cars that he will be a top contender in a year or two. He's just in it for the experience right now, but he was my favorite for YEARS when he did both Indy and CART. He was finally getting the respect he deserved these past few seasons, so I can't wait to see what he can do in NASCAR. |

Speaking of.. @$%$&*(@ fuck Kyle Busch. :foc:
That was a pretty intense race though just now. Talladega never gets boring. 4 and 5 wide. Two big wrecks, one on the LAST LAP. Pretty crazy stuff. |

I don't know... I don't know enough about what it takes to be a great driver. All I know is some cars are better, faster, etc. Knowing what I know, I don't know if I can take any racer serious.

What we will do for the sake of argument, is put Gertner (or anyone who shaes his opinion) in a racecar with the best team, an unlimited budget and watch him win his first race. No skill involved, it shouldn't be hard. |

hardly. The salary cap has pretty much killed that with the exception of baseball and when was the last time the yanks won? It's friggen ridiculius in auto racing. Look at formula 1. IT's not a sport, it never has been a sport. It's driivng a fucking race car around the track. If you put Jeff Gordon on one of the lessor teams he wouldn't win shit. |

Dude, i drive an avenger and i don't know shit about cars.
The fact that a woman can compete makes it not a sport. I'm not saying you can't enjoy it, but don't tell me it's a sport. I can't do algebra, does that make doing math a sport....no. Look at hockey. There's NO WAY a female could play in the nhl. Hayley Wichenheiser couldn't even make the top league in Finland. The same can be said for soccer, football and basketball, all real sports. |

Gertner, you have no idea how big of an idiot you are coming off as right now. If you knew anything about what you were talking about you would know that money isn't everything. I'm sure it helps to be able to replace cars if wrecked, but they are working with the same hardware. There are strict regulations in place to keep everyone on an even playing field.
There is a reason new drivers pop into the winner's circle all the time. Because they were simply better at that moment. Don't just make generalizations because you don't like the sport. There is so much about driving that the average person doesn't even know. There is a reason why Dale Jr. and Tony Stewart make a fucking amazing drafting duo. Because they KNOW what they are doing. It has shit all to do with their money. They're not even on the same team but because they know what they are doing they can go from the back of the pack to the front in no time at all with eachother's help. Look at it this way. Dario Franchitti is loaded. He was a CART champion and is married to Ashley Judd. But he has shit all experience driving NASCAR cars and has all the experience driving open-wheeled instead. So he has been doing pretty horribly in NASCAR because he doesn't know what he is doing there. That is a driver who has years and years of experience racing, and still can't compete with the current champs, regardless of how much money he obviously has. |

Wait, did you actually just say that because a woman can do it on an equal level with men, that it is not a sport? Because if you did, any semblance of an argument or any opinion you ever had on the issue just went out the window.

That's not what I was getting at. What I was getting at was that you said it -isn't a sport- if a woman can compete with men on an equal level. And -that- is why you don't think racing is a sport? Because women can compete at the same level as men?
Going off on a limb and on the other end of the spectrum here, I bet you don't think figure skating is a sport then. Women compete on an even level with men, yet that is a physically competitive sport. Hell, they even compete together. It takes a huge amount of skill and precision, as well as physical strength and stamina to do what they do. But because women can compete on an equal level with men, by the reasoning you've stated in this thread then you don't think it is a sport. |

I don't think there is a good enough reason out there for people NOT to take her seriously. Might be a male dominated sport but she is obviously racing because she is good enough to do so. If this was a more physical sport then you would have an argument to call it a gimmick. There is far too much money and danger in this sport for any racing team to be messing around with gimmicks. Good luck to her.

I'm a big racing/Nascar fan, but I don't usually mention it too much around here cus it wasn't very well received. But I don't mind Danica, though it seems that she is geting the most attention cus she has been competitive in the Indycar series. Other female drivers have been around but some haven't been very competitive, such as Milka Duno. The only grief I had with her victory is that is was done on fuel mileage, and her not having the best car. I would really take her seriously if she had the best car and won it all on here own.
Nascar-wise, I still watch every week, but becoming less interested than I was. I hate the new car they are running, it just looks like shit. I try to be somewhat obsecure when it comes to liking drivers. My favorite is Matt Kenseth, mainly cus he doesn't cause a whole lot of attention, but is always up there competing for the win. However this year isn't going well for him as he has blown 2 flat tires and hit the wall the last 2 races. Though I am starting to like Kyle Busch more just cus everyone else hates him so much. He's exciting to watch, even if he is a douche. |
