On the day you were born
Who was the WWF/E champ?
Using this link: http://www.listology.com/content_sho...6190/Wrestling Lets try to get a little activity in here. Post who was the champ on the day you were born, and right a few lines about what you think of them, and possibly how it affected your wrestling maturity if applicable. (Provided you watched them in your youth.) And if you do this I will rep you. For me it was Superstar Billy Graham. I've never been huge on Graham as he usherd in the era of "sports entertainment." He's largely responsable for why I was NWA man to death. He laid down the ground for the Hogans of the buisness, big muscle head that couldn't work but could talk. He was the first World champion to really go this route, before him guys had to be credible tough guys and really be able to put on a show in the ring. Graham a legend, but he's what I think is wrong with the buisness, so thank Graham, because of you I'm a Ric Flair mark with a dog named Harley Race. Good jerb. Look forward to seeing a thousand posts about Hulk Hogan. ![]() |

Also on my birthday Triple H beat The Rock for the title in an Iron Man match in my home state which I was present for. So that's pretty awesome.

I guess I will be the first to talk about Hogan then...before the onslaught...
Just 4 days before my birthday, Hulk Hogan won HIS title back from the Iron Sheik. It was symbolic of the times, in that I really felt like the title was Hogan's as I grew up. I would watch occasionally and bought figures, and spent hours and hours of my childhood making my own dream matches and events with all the figures I had. The figures were definately a means for me, a fan, to have Hogan lower down on the card, lol. Thinking about it now, I was embittered to Hogan and his dominance, even when I was so young. I grew to dislike him at his peak (and actually like him a lot more today, despite what I know). I was a massive mark for Savage and for me, Hogan just got in the way. I suppose he also started the trend that has stuck with me right up until today...my preference of heels and an immediate dislike for anyone who looks like becoming dominant. |

YESSSSSSSSSS!!!!!
BOB FUCKING BACKLUND!!!! Words cannot describe how awesome this man is. In the 80’s during his run, from what I know, he was a pure wrestler and at the time the last of a dying breed. As once he lost his title to Sheik the OTT characters started to take over. But it’s not his 1980’s run I want to talk about, it’s his mid 90’s return, which at first seemed pointless, I remember watching Vignettes at the time, and even as a mark I was thinking this would be crap, they really over did his return to wrestling and frankly, he looked old, too old for me to want to cheer for him, but then came his glorious heel turn and the introduction of the chicken wing. I swear, his heel antics around that time were stunning, I remember his feud with Bret far more than most feuds, Bob really came into his own around that time, and was part of, what was at the time the quickest title match in WWF history, when he jobbed to Diesel in 7 seconds. Things were not over for crazy old Mr Backlund though, he tried to become President, and eventually ended up on TNA, where he’d prefer to walk 5 miles, then take a 10 minute car ride. My favourite Backlund story is actually from Jericho’s book, where he told a story on how they were working the gimmick table and doing autographs and Mr Backlund would ask ever Japanese fan that approached him the same question: ‘Name all 50 US states’ when the fan couldn’t do what was asked, he told them to get out of his sight, until one fan did manage to actually name all the states required, Backlund then signed his name twice for him. Mr Backlund will forever go down as a wrestler who I never thought stood another chance at the top and proved me (and everyone else) wrong |

Bob Backlund.
Jeesus. I never watched him in his prime, didnt see him until the early 90s days, which was an angle I never enjoyed. Even worse, he dropped to Diesel, another reign I didn't like. But I was also an NWA guy inthe 80s, and on the flip side, Ric Flair was fresh off his title win over Harley Race at Starcade 83, in one of the BEST matches of all time. Now Ric is my favorite ever. I used to watch him in the late 80s NWA, and I love him, and luckily my Uncle taped every televised NWA event, so I went back and watched all his earlier stuff. Ric was the single BEST character ever. I really miss the territory dynamic. Ric was the rich cheater in the land of the poor redneck in a sense, so they HATED him. Great heat. Then you had Southern Dusty, a son of a plumber, the every man, who the fans could relate to. It also allowed you to bring in guys from the area and get them over. If you are in the North, bring in a southerner, and have them be the Southern Yankee hating rebel. Then send him back south, and he is the local hero. You cant do that anymore with the touring like it is today. I think ECW was so popular because it was like a territory. Sure they went to CA and FL every so often, but the NY/PA border areas were their land, and they were able to make a cult following based on that. It is hard to break in National, which Is why I think TNA is barely cutting it. The build has to be slow. The WWF only made it because they bought the competition, and brought in stars from all over which brought their fans (Signed away guys from AWA to get the north, Georgia got the south, Riper brought the west coast and so forth.) |

Guess I'm the second to talk about Hogan then. Being honest I've not really seen much of Hogans stuff. Being born in 1987 I missed out on the late 80s dominance and I never really watched WCW so all I really know is the WWE run.
Hogans of course one of the first names people think of when they think about Wrestling and I guess it was no different for me. Even though I never got a chance to really see him I always knew the name. Of course by the time I started becoming properly aware of what I was watching (I've always been around wrestling as my mother was a fan) he wasn't in WWF so growing up I'd mostly cheer for the likes of Shawn Micheals or Taker. So I'm not really a big fan of Hogan and while I understand the impact he has had on the business I've never really gotten into the whole Hulkamania thing. |

Honestly though, I use to love Hogan as a kid, but I've come to loathe him overtime. I loved him in the NWO, and I loved him when he came back to the WWE vs the Rock... From there though... Dear God... Go the fuck away. And outside of wrestling, the guy seems to be an utter cunt, and should probably be hit in the head with a fucking bat.

Honestly, I liked Hogan only from the time after he beat Macho at 5, until the shitty finish of WM 8.
I was at WM 6, and I hated the Warrior, so I was so into Hogan in that period. I cried when he lost (I was 6 gimme a break) because when he left, I honestly thought that he was done. I loved his fued with the Sarge too. And even with Taker, Quake, and Justice. Good stuff. He is and was always a great showman, but I was always into the NWA and it's style. In the WWF, I was into a few guys, mainly Macho, Perfect, Rude and Dibiase, all guys that would have been better suited to the NWA

When I was a kid and people would tell me that wrestling was fake I would tell that Hogan stuff was fake but the NWA/AWA were real. Hated the WWF product. My dad watched it though, and I watched it with him, I just would ratehr be watching any other brand of wrestling at the time.
He used to laugh at me because I'd sit there and make fun of "the fake stuff." Good times. |

FFS, you think getting Hogan on your day of birth was bad? The bastard has terrorised me!
I was born (15/05/84) about 4 months into Hogan's 4 year run (Jan 84 - Feb 88) so he was champ for my birth, 1st, 2nd and 3rd birthdays. Then the fucker regained the title in time for my 5th (89), 7th (91), 9th (93) and then unbelievably 18th (02). That's EIGHT birtdays out of 24! The rest were Macho Man (88, 92), Ultimate Warrior (90), Bret (94), Diesel (95), HBK (96), Taker (97), Austin (98, 99, 01) Rock (00), Lesnar (03), Eddie Guerrerro (04) Then Cena takes over from Hogan and takes the spot on my 21st, 22nd and 23rd birthdays before HHH was champ on this years' birthday. So, for my most important Birthdays (Birth, 18th, 21st) I had Hogan for 2 of em and Cena for th eother. GREAT! God can only know who this has affected me. |

Oh Jesus! How right you are.
Hogan was WCW Champ for my 11th (95), 13th (97) and 14th (98). Which means that Hogan has held a World Title on ELEVEN of my 24 birthdays. Combine that with Cena's 3 year strangle hold and the 2 of them have held titles on more than half of my birthdays!!!

Macho Man Randy Savage
Savage rules...unfortunately I didn't start watching until like 1998 by which point he was a member of the Wolfpack. Shame I didn't get to see any of Savage in his prime, but I still think Savage/Steamboat is one of the best matches I've ever seen. |

you know everybody always puts WWF 1998 above WCW, but I thought it was some of the coolest TV when Nash and Savage split from the nWo and formed a rebel group. It's too bad Macho got injured because that was a sweet concept at the very beginning.

Just at the end of Hogan's first reign.
Starting out as a mark (like most do), I was a Hogan fan. But I think it had more to do with the nWo than anything else. I liked his feud with Piper (80's), but again, it was an outside source that pulled me to him. Of course, over the last decade, I've come to realize how big an asshole he really is. He did a lot for sports entertainment, and I don't think anyone can deny that, but as a person, they don't come too much more terrible. If I'd only been born about ten days later I could have had Andre or the vacant spot. Either one would have sufficed to prevent me from having to write about Hogan. |

Hulk Hogan
Honestly, I didn't get into wrestling till 1998, so going through my childhood with the occasional mention of Hulk Hogan as World Champion was a so-so thing to me. When I finally did get into it though, he was hit and miss with me...going between entertaining and annoying. I really rather not go further into than that, because everyone here knows the history of Hulk Hogan. On a side note though, Ric Flair was the NWA Champion when I was born.

Yeah, The Wolfpac could have been amazing, and maybe saved the ratings. Instead it became the Nash show. Then when they added Sting and Luger for no reason I quit. Ruined sting for me too.

yes, I agree, adding Sting and Luger, although it looked cool in the moment, just killed the whole rebel story. Actually if you guys remember, they teased the split months before. Remember the Nitro when just Syxx and Nash were there and Hogan and co were out in hollywood? And Nash and Syxx were at the announce table shooting on Hogan. Great TV.

So yeah, Backlund for me. Which I'm indifferent to.
Interesting though to think that I'm like 6 months older than the IC title. And that Ricky Steamboat was NWA US champion, feuding with Flair. |
