Well there didn't need to be the T3 that there was. It was a huge step backwards. It was a simplified version of the T2 plot with worse characters and far inferior quality. It also didn't really do anything new with the exception of like 1 or 2 tiny new ideas.

A Cameron T3, which he announced several times, was supposedly (according to his interviews) supposed to be a merging of the Terminator style time travel/chase film with the Future War and what not. He called T23D, which is awesome, a stepping stone.

So, who knows, but it would have been fuckin epic. It also would have been a huge deal, and likely on a much bigger scale.
I'd have loved to see a Cameron written/directed T3 with Arnold, Linda Hamilton, Robert Patrick, ILM and Stan Winston and a massive budget circa 2002 or 3.

There's also no reason why Bale couldn't have been a matured John Connor, so everyone could have their cake and eat it too.

It's one of those great sequels that never happened
