So, are you saying right now is a good time to buy WWE stock with a buy and hold strategy?

Well, I'm tempted.

But seriously, the effect of the champion can really be seen in buyrates, and as I'm discussing BDC, there is only a chance of affecting stock price if there's some sort of longerterm problem. Even that's going to be indirect, and not likely to be major. Unless CM Punk kills a hooker, Triple H is caught with a needle in his arm by Fox News, or Chris Jericho gets caught fucking a 9 year old boy (The next morning, TPWW asks: Is pedophilia really all that bad?), or Batista climbs the Empire State Building holding one of the Divas hostage, there's not going to be a huge impact, or any real correlation between the champ and the stock prices. Especially considering how the stock prices reflect more than the quality of the PPVs or shows and PPV buyrates do not.

JBL's title reign did see a decline in buyrates on almost every Smackdown brand PPV. Compare that to Raw, where only one show was down from the years surrounding it (I think it was Backlash), and you have an interesting trend. Ratings bounced back pretty shortly after JBL dropped the belt, too.

As for how much, most of the shows were down like .3 points, which in a show where you at best get into the 1.2 range, is a lot. One show was unaffected, one was up by .2. Attendances were also down, and that was almost Universal. That's easier to quantify (Since it's not as dependent on other factors), and we're looking at a ballpark of 15-20% over the course of Bradshaw's reign. This, combined with news from the industry about disappointment and poor performance (Industry "news" should always be taken with a grain of salt) kind of paints a negative picture.

The champion is not the sum total of the buyrates and attendances, but he does have an impact, especially since that shiny prop still counts for something even if the champ is in a secondary fued.

Also, that they'd keep the belt on JBL while attendences went down is about as surprising as the fact that they kept Triple H on TV when he was tanking in the Quarter Hours. I know, that's different, because Triple H is family and zomfgtripulhistheman, but once we get past the Pavlovian response.....

Can you not put some of that down to the difference in rosters at the time, than simply the champion?
