Parappa was a strange game that definitely turned some people away with it's strange sense of humor and even stranger visual style, but the music was top notch (professional sounding, recorded in a real New York studio), and it was basically the start of rhythm-action games. Guitar Hero & Rock Band, and even their predecessors like Beatmania all owe something to Parappa, because that game actually did pretty well in Japan and, particularly, the US. So even if you don't like the game, respect your elders, yo.

I loved the game. People couldn't understand what was appealing about it, but it was quirky and fun.
