I remember way back in like 1998 when I first played this I got that Sector 7 Key from the excavation site and I used it to get back into Midgar. I think I was on that screen outside of Aeris's house where they have the flowers and I saw this transparent little figure of Aeris float by. I was just like what?????? I think that was Aeris. I have no idea whether or not this actually happened or if I was hallucinating. Nobody else remembered seeing it and I've never heard anything about it. So I dunno.

Yeah, there was supposed to be some way you could go around trading all these items to the guy in the slums of Midgar to bring Aeris back. There is an extra rock for her in the final battle. But I guess they took that out because they had to ship the game? Someone else aka wikipedia probably has a better explanation.
