Part of me thinks Minnesota anticipated this happening, which is why they drafted Jonny Flynn, too. They hold the rights to Rubio, and like their GM has been saying, they don't really care if he stays in Europe at this point because they're not going to win anytime soon, anyway. They ultimately hold his rights, and right now, if he wants to play in the NBA anytime soon, he'll have to play for Minnesota. I think they have a lot more leverage than people are giving them credit for. They're probably better off letting Rubio further develop in Europe (maybe he'll develop an actual jumpshot...who knows) and wait until his contract buyout isn't so large. I think part of the problem is that Rubio needs to pay the team $6 million, and under league rules, the NBA team can only pay like $500,000 of a buyout...Rubio didn't even make $1 million this year from what I remember.
