Price cut for PS3?

Sony is under increasing pressure to lower the cost of its lagging game console.

Discuss.

They've been "under increasing pressure" for over a year now. If they were going to lower the price, they would have by now. The fact is, they've made so many unsound business decisions relating to the PS3 and PSP that they've created a situation where they can't afford to lower the cost of the hardware, but they can't afford NOT to lower it either.

Don't be ridiculous. Sony's overtaking Micro$oft and will be the #2 console by the end of the year.

...What, with Darkpower not around, someone had to say it.

Like the Token Negro said, they've been under pressure for ages. the hardware was too expensive to begin with. They were already taking a HUUUUUUGe loss on the hardware for ages, and they've been scrapping features to make the unit more affordable. I think the newest PS3 is just a cardboard box with "Blu-Ray"written on it. No, I kid.

But yeah, Microsoft has been able to cut production costs to the point they can price break, and Nintendo's selling well enough they could raise the price and sell as well as before. Sony's in a position where they had to cut the production costs artificially (removing features) and they're still losing money on the console. They can't afford to cut the retail more, but they kind of have to to stay competitive. Sure, a new MGS will temporarily boost sales. But after that....
