A couple domestic disturbance calls to his house that resulted in temporary restraining orders, and some kind of civil lawsuit over a rental car.

It'd probably be better to say "If he didn't have an unregistered gun nothing would have ever happened"...it's not shooting himself that got himself in trouble, it was the possession of the illegal firearm.
