Simple, really. In single player, if your star power is topped out and you hit another SP phrase, nothing happens. Now, in multiplayer, if I'm topped out while playing with, say, you and Funky, you guys get my extra star power split up evenly between you. So for two players, half each. Of course, this is useless if you and Funky are topped out, but if we're all topped out, we should probably be reaping that sweet band multiplier.

For some of the "Fill your SP gauge as many times as possible" challenges, maybe all, I don't know, it seems like this is a necessity. Mostly because I've nailed all the SP phrases on a song with no sustained notes, and it was only enough for Platinum. Since it's a bass (I think) challenge, a second player can't help directly....But if he keeps his SP gauge topped out, he can donate to me.
