A great character from wrestling history? For sure. In the same league as Vince, Hogan, Austin, Flair etc? Nah.
Apparently he wasn't even that much of a draw, in the long term. That's why he travelled so much and came in for one-shots rather than long tenures... Andre was a great draw for a one-off battle royal or match but promoters didn't know how to book him for a long period and his drawing power waned the longer he was around.

I'm not saying that's neccessarily true, but I've heard a few people in the business say it. Even during his biggest "TV years" (heel turn WWF) he had the one massive PPV, the one massive network TV rating and for the most part treaded water as the resident midcard legend/monster thereafter. He was certainly a fucking awful wrestler for the last decade of his life.

Possibly the business' biggest household name prior to the rise of Hogan, but top 4 most important names in the biz? I don't think Andre should be there.

Anyway the point of the thread is YOUR personal top 4 men who most influenced YOU and made you love wrestling... Steve fuckin' Lombardi could be on there if you wanted. Therefore, despite those great entertainers who have come along since, I'm going to have to plump for four guys who really got me hooked on the wrestling when I first started watching. So:
