UFC fighter was eating ketchup and rice before UFC 104
UFC fighter was eating ketchup and rice before UFC 104
By Steve Cofield ![]() If anyone needed a huge postfight bonus at UFC 104, it was Pat Barry. The heavyweight out of New Orleans, scored Knockout of the Night and Fight of the Night for his victory over Antoni Hardonk. That was good enough for $120,000. Good thing, Barry needed the infusion of cash in the worst way. He confirmed to MMAScrapsRadio that he was completely down on his luck before the fight, agreeing that he had little to eat in Los Angeles the week of the fight. "I still had my apartment but if something would've happened and the fight had been canceled, I would've been evicted six days later."Barry, 30, said he didn't even tell his trainer Duke Roufus for fear that he would think the fighter had the wrong motivation going into the fight. Barry said he didn't ask anyone for money including his mother: "I could ask someone but then at the same time, how hard are you going to work for something if everytime you get in trouble somebody catches you? I did something to put myself in this position I have to work my way out of it."Listen to Barry talk about his troubles before the fight: Barry got his $120,000 bonus check last Tuesday. He couldn't believe it. When he went to deposit the check, his truck wouldn't start. Barry got a jump and hit the bank sporting a black eye and pink striped shorts. "I go to the bank, I'm sweaty, I've got the black eye, I haven't shaven in two days, I'm strung out because I haven't slept, I have green circles under my eyes so I'm like 'Can I have a deposit slip mam?'. She gives it to me, I fill it out hand it to her. She looks at the deposit slip, then the check, then looks at me and says 'Excuse me I'll be right back.' Then a manager comes out, a guy in a suit and says 'What seems to be the problem?' I was like 'Well I have a black eye, that's the only problem I know this looks really ridiculous.' So he asks me for my ID, I hand him my license an he's like 'Your license says Pat Barry, but this check was written to Patrick Barry.' So I decided to be funny and tell him Pat Barry is in my trunk right now. He didnt laugh. So I told him take your time man do whatever you need to do because I have no where to go and my truck probably wont start when I go outside so you can just do whatever you need to do. An hour later he came back and everything was fine, the check was in my bank account."Listen here to the entire Barry interview. |

During his MMA career, except for UFC 104, the past 2 UFC events he was in got him 17k total and the other two were in Combat USA so I imagine he wasn't getting paid very well. 17k is not very much unless you live very cautiously and spend as little as you can but it's not that easy plus bills can pile up and you don't know if he needed to pay off other bills prior to winning. This is a recent lucky break for him. It didn't happen every time he fought so this guy really needed it. He's not one of the guys who gets paid a lot for his fights as he is not a big name.
If he hadn't won both the knock out and fight of the night which were worth 60k each then he would have walked away with only 14k. So with what we know about him he would probably use it to fix up his truck or get a different used one which would take a big chunk out of the 14k plus a lot of food and to pay his rent and whatever else. I can't imagine he can survive that well on 14k until his next fight which would be in months. |

Most, if not all, love doing this. They want to be fighters. They want the glory of being the best. They know they are going to go through hardships and I doubt they will let it get in the way of their dreams. Some people rack up a lot of debt in tuition and still have to pay it off after College and even then some have to do something else. I think one person even tried to sue the school he was at.

But that's NOT an excuse for these guys to get paid 14k every 2-3 months, if they're lucky and don't get injured.

How about Joe Buttfuck, coming off the bench for the Indianapolis Colts? I'm not saying Pat should make $100 mil a year. I'm just saying that he shouldn't have to worry about making ends meet. The fact you're arguing for the guy getting paid shit is kind of pathetic. |

He showed he isn't well rounded by how Tim Hague submitted him. So how much should a guy get paid when he is reasonably unproven, without an elite level background in his previous sport and coming off a submission loss to a BJJ blue belt? And did he enter the cage without any sponsors on his shorts? Thought not. |

I mean, if he fights only 3 times a year, thats 50k. Presuming his sponsorship covers his training, that is an average wage, and until he beat Hardonk, he was an average fighter.

I am just wanting to restate here for the people who are not getting this:
I'm debating with people that a guy who is fighting for a living SHOULD getting paid decently. He had made 17k total on his first to fights, and barring the bonus, he would have made 14k, INCLUDING his win bonus. So, had he lost the fight, he would be making 24k a year, not much more than I make working at a Rental Car agency. I won't go into the sponsorship deals. I heard this surfer one time had a sponsorship deal with Quicksilver. What did that get him? A free surfboard. Is MMA = Surfing? Who knows. For all we know, a TapouT sponsorship for a lower tier guy means that he just doesn't have to buy his $55 fighting shorts in exchange for wearing their shorts and a shirt to the ring. And, as for how much should he be paid? How about "Enough to not have to eat ketchup and rice before a PPV he's fighting on?" |

Well, Surfing is a sport where all the associated brands are already hugely successful, yet there is not a mainstream market for its regular viewing. Quicksilver probably spend enough money putting on and sponsoring competitions just to keep the sport in its competative sence, alive.
MMA has PPV exposure, and alot of the brand's aren't globally mainstream. Not to mention all the press. The ad space is worth a fair bit if you are on the main show. Plus most fighters have 4 or 5. And these sponsors always include a suppliment brand, a clothing brand and or a training equiptment brand, which no doubt supplies these things to the fighters as part of the package. That is a healthy portion of their training outgoings. If he had have lost that fight, then he should have gotten a real job. Why should a loser make a comfortable living as a fighter? That's just not how it works. Also, 3 fights, 3 12 week camps... Maybe he should fight more, or open an ebay store for his 12 weeks a year off. |

You can be sure the Yankess pay their utility infielder as little as its viable for them to pay.

They actually have to pay them the league minimum, which is what Pat Berry Makes...
At his current rate... For about 5 years. Actually, his fight of the night and KO of the night bonuses are comparable to what said Utility Infielder would make. |

Irrespective. If he want's to be average in his profession and be in sports, then that is his place, in a National pasttime that has been around as long as organised religion. MMA is an upstart sport and his has only proved he is any good at it as a result of the fight that saved his arse.
Winners get the money, and losers can go fuck themselves. Without that eithos, combat as a rewarding, both competatively and financially, sport wouldnt exist. |
