I felt I should make this public rather than send Minch a PM on the matter.

I do not believe we are entitled to pirated products of any kind (movies, games, music). I've had many debates with my brother on the matter, as he's been an avid purchaser of pirated games. He has burned games into the high 50s, many of them I've enjoyed.

But I do not support them. I have never, in my fucking life, gave a dime to some pirate for any media. I aim to be a apart of the entertainment industry, it would be treacherous to partake in the under-hand market. These products cost money to make, then some bastard copies it on some blank disc and profits from another person's/team's work. This is wrong to me. BUT, I've played pirated games. Somehow, this makes me a hypocrite to some. Let's analyze this in ways most of you can understand:

Let's say I make a movie. It cost me $2,000 altogether. I print a mess of DVDs and aim to sell enough to make that money back and then some. I want the production, promotion, and distribution cost back to break even and then money on top to profit. This is how the entertainment industry works in a nutshell. Smart-asses, spare me the details.

Now let's say some techie with blank DVD-Rs buys one of my copies. He goes on to copy the movie on several blank DVDs and sell it for $1. The quality is on par, save for presentation issues, of course. I've been selling official copies for $10. Now while I believe most people would buy official, a great deal of potential customers are gonna go for the pirated deal. That's money out of my pocket and in to his, who had nothing to do with the production/promotion/distribution. He banks because he had a DVD burner. My creativity and production is his profit. If that isn't wrong to you, fuck off.

Now, my beef - as the fucking creator - would not be with whoever the purchaser of the pirated copy watches the movie with. Why would it be? Let's use logic, guys: That person has nothing to do with the spread of piracy. He/she made no orders or copies - I can care less if they're watching a pirated movie. I suppose you could wager that by them watching it, they'd be motivated not to buy it - but that's something I'd have to live with whether the movie's pirated or not. My gripe is the very real loss of money taking place by the pirate and his customers.

So how is me playing pirated games harming the developer/publisher when I'm pretty fucking sure I'm buying those games anyway?

Shit, I've brought games while my bro was getting burned copies back when I was working - so fuck that hypocrisy shit. Get the facts before calling shit, boys.

Question: Do you own these pirated copies that you are playing, or is it just stuff that your brother or friend brings you to play once and a while?

Only flaw with your movie pirate argument is in the case of torrents where in theory you are a seeder and a leecher for any piece of media you want as a torrent due to the nature of how torrents work. So in a way, the leecher (customer) can end up as a seeder (seller) even before the torrent is over.

No, it's still fairly simple. What are you doing making your media free for mass download? YOu knew how it worked going in so yeah, the case is the same - just minus $ (which is kinda worse).

Its easily the dullest argument of all time. Piracy is clearly wrong but those that do it ( i.e me ) don't give a fuck really and will continue to enjoy our free media. I honestly can't say the last time I bought a film or cd. Probably buy about 3-4 games per year because chipping my X-Box seems like hard work.

I will be getting a job in the same industry that I pirate from, but whatever. I don't have money, and there are way too many products these days that are just not worth their price.

If I had money, I would probably buy a game on a console rather than download it on PC (if given the option of a multi-platform game). But really, I play too many games to warrant paying for all of them. Like, there is no way that I would be exposed to all the types of games that I have, if I had to pay for all of them. I would probably have never gotten as into gaming, honestly.

I have an elite for playing my real games and on live.
I do download games to play on a flashed xbox, if I like the game i'll buy it.

But i'm not paying £40 for a game which i'm going to hate.
Sure I could rent it but I only get the game for 2 days, plus it costs £4.
The ammount of free time I get now isn't great. So by downloading a copy of the game I cant get a good look at the game, play it when I want, if the game is awesome enough, it's worth a purchase.

Every album I ever wanted I downloaded. My bro hates that about me so should I have him join this spot and say so?

And call it "Internet Ego" if you want. All I wanted to do was correct your ass, because I do that, I clarify things rather than let it ride. I should be able to do that without getting this shit. I don't know many that would go through such lengths to be clear about something. This thread isn't dedicated to you per se, but it's certainly not attacking you outright. I just wanted you to understand.

@ Extreme Angle: You have... an understandable way of doing things. You buy games eventually. But surely you have many sources to help you against buying a game you'd hate. It doesn't much time to research a game you're interested in, even with the little time you say you have. Nobody's asking you to pay 40 for a game you'd hate, though.

@ Requiem: You're not entitled to anything, really. No matter how many games the industry 'attacks' you with, you don't need to buy them all. It's not some uncontrollable urge that you need to get burns because you can't afford them.

@ Kane: I just made myself pretty clear on where I stand. Ogen supports it, I don't. Big difference there.

I don't think you understand why I neg repped you. I'll run it down for you.

You know what the statement was. You said you just played the games, but didn't support piracy. Supporting piracy isn't just giving some guy off the street a buck for a ripped dvd. Piracy is torrenting, downloading, whatever. Playing pirated games? That's supporting it. I know piracy isn't right, I torrent music. Shoot me. However, saying you don't support piracy yet you play the games is dumb.

Why don't you just delete the thread?

None of which I've done. I literally just play what my brother gets. He doesn't get games 'for me' nor do I order through his contact. I don't DL the freely distributed files either.
