I don't get the story complaint either. Yea, it's a common story. We all have seen it in Dances With Wolves, Pocohantas, etc. That doesn't mean anything. It's told with a new style and twist, in a whole new setting. The story dates back to Mellville and Typee anyways.
All stories tend to resemble one of a set group of stories that are told over and over. It's part of our culture. Nobody complains that Tommy Boy and Lion King are essentially the same movie. I didn't hear anyone complaining about the story not being worthy of the visuals this year when Star Trek came out. It's more similar to the original Star Wars than Avatar is to Dances With Wolves. It's a hero journey. There's thousands of them. The outsider from a hostile culture being assimilated into the pure world of natives is a classic story, and will be told over and over. These epic movies tend to follow archetypes |
