But if I am to make up an excuse for him, I'd make up the excuse that he is all for Kayfabe and has his beard out of control to make it look like he just made the split second decision to return on the night, thus not having time to trim his beard. Then the next time we see him after his return, he's had time to trim his beard and that's why it looks normal after he returns.
