Today the dvd hits and I was just curious to see how many people here were gonna pick up the film considering there is really nothing on it but the movie and the fact that they are gonna re-release it at the end of the year and bring a special edition out on dvd.

Bought the Blu-Ray which comes with a DVD for less than $10 more and besides that I had to buy it today cuz afterwards the price goes up best movies of 2009 despite it's unoriginality.

I think first weekend ticket sales are more indicative of that. If you look at the top 10, 20, or 50 grossing movies of alltime, you will see a trend in popularity and cultural impact.
They reach that height because of people continuing to go see them, and word of mouth spreading. I think that's popularity. Even if that popularity gets so large that it causes a backlash, it existed.
Something like Spiderman 3 and Transformers 2 are examples of people going to see a movie based on pre-conceptions. The huge dropoffs they experienced indicate the general dislike for the product.

Granted everything makes way more money now because of inflation. A movie like Avatar may have grossed more money than Star Wars or Gone With The Wind, but it sold nowhere near as many tickets.
Even a movie like The Dark Knight outperformed Spider-Man financially, but sold around the same amount of tickets.

Yeah, and this phenomena in particular has been pissing me off lately--mostly thanks to Avatar pushing itself as the #1 MOVIE OF ALL TIME HERP DERP. Thank GOD they don't have to include that part where tickets cost more, there's more theaters available to the public at large, moviegoing trends in general have changed, etc., etc. It made the most money, clearly it has won.

Likewise, Daniel Craig is the Guiness book of world records for being the most successful James Bond: after all, his movies made more money than the other movies. Period. Fuckin' silly.

Absolutely. It's ridiculous. It's all relative though. Box office numbers don't indicate anything outside of their time period really.
For instance, Jaws was a much bigger hit in it's time than something like Iron Man, but it made less money because of inflation.

If you look at the top grossing movie by year, though, it's usually the most popular movie of that year.

Without looking at that list I would without question say the biggest movie events of my life (in terms of public interest) were Titanic, Episode 1, The Dark Knight and Avatar. The list seems to support that.
I remember The Lion King and Jurassic Park being massive as well, but I was a bit too young to fully gauge that. They obviously were.

Everything else is just as it always seemed to me. Hits, but not mega-hits. Hollywood loves to hype the inflated box office.

I watched it again and liked it slightly less than before. It's definitely more of a theater experience, but still good. The "it's super popular so we must all hate it" routine if far more tiring than a movie claiming it's number 1 based solely on gross profit.
