Alrighty, here is what that segment accomplished:
1) It symbolises the changing of the guard. Edge was on his way out, and regardless of if he is a heel or not now, basically it was a "Goodbye Edge, Hello Christian" segment. The idea is that casual fans will now take Christian as a new "Face of SmackDown!." 2) We got to see the tease of energy that there would be for an Edge vs. Christian match. The fans really seemed into their interaction, and the history between the two has now been established as something present, so that we can build to a program between the two. At the very earliest, Bragging Rights could be a place for that, but WrestleMania XXVII seems better -- and hell, even WrestleMania XXVIII, which is rumoured to be in Toronto. 3) Edge properly turned heel. His actions on RAW were pretty obvious, but the reaction he got when he came out was positive. This allowed us to see the "coward" and "liar" that the Edge character ultimately is. Whether or not you agree with the heel turn, him lying to the crowd, attacking Christian from behind, and then bailing on Captain Charisma drew pretty definitive face/heel lines. Basically, while the two were on the same show for one more night, Michael Hayes used this as an opportunity to use Edge to put over Christian without blowing his wad. Be happy, people. |
