This face run is absolutely vital to the Viper we have now. HE realized that he can't be the ass kissing face that Cena is, and he had to channel some SCSA

In 2004, Randy Orton was just 24 years old. He had wrestling experience but no real solid acting experience.

I don't see how his Gimmick then could have been any better being so new into the business. He was the young heel in Evolution but the quiet one. He gained fame by this...

In 2004, Orton became the youngest World Heavyweight Champion, when he won the title at the age of twenty-four. With this win, Orton departed from Evolution and a feud with his former stablemates began.

He became face by taking on those older established heels.

I loved his gimmick as I could root for him to take people down like Jeff Hardy does or Kofi.

He then got some charisma and deviance by tagging with Edge and making a tag team out of it. Looking back, that was a brilliant move..

Maybe The Miz should stick with Jericho if you look back as how Orton got better from teaming with Edge.. But they'd need to make a team name and slogan like the Rated RKO did.

Randy then got fame for being a vicious heel by taking out poor old established legends... That really put him over, and punting people to the head.

It created a psychotic character which led to the beginning of Legacy and such...

6 years later, it's about time we have gotten to this point, but the storylines have made it possible for him to be this over.

If only Cena was given this much thought and work on his character, maybe then, the fans would be as appreciative and excited.

If Orton gets ran over by a car and is out for 3 months, it'd be much more exciting to see him return then Cena.. It's because Orton is edgy and the guy we want to be...

The BADASS with no care, but put into a position where he's gotta helpout the innocent because they are being picked on even tho he feels it isn't his business...

The reluctant hero.

Conversely, Randy Orton was awesome back in 2004.

His heel run for the better half of the year, including his fued with Foley, is still the best stuff of his career.

In 1998, Orton enlisted with the United States Marine Corps. There, he received a bad conduct discharge a year later after going AWOL on two separate occasions and disobeying an order from a commanding officer. Under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, Private First Class Orton was tried and convicted under a special court-martial and was put into a military prison for thirty-eight days.

Cena would never have done this...

This is why Orton is badass...

Stone Cold wouldn't give a DAMN who he pissed off..

Surprised they don't out this more to add to his character!

While I'm no fan of bandwagon jumping, if a guy is performing well people are going to be more inclined to like him... and if he's being bland and lame, people will "jump off the bandwagon".

Wrestling is sort of hard to be a die hard fan of someone... I mean people will always admit he's a talented guy, BUT when he's underperforming there's going to be people who aren't so hot on him. It's not like real pro sports where you actually support a team cuz they're the home town team.

Stop thinking you're so damned clever, for once in your fucking life.

Must admit the entrance that was posted seems rough but he was afterall trying to get the crowd worked up it almost looks like he was about to lose it laughing at himself. Honestly I didn't mind the face run I remember he screwed up majorly twice on the mic but i'd seen much more experienced guys do the same sorta thing. When he joined Edge though I marked the fawk out as these were 2 of my faves at the time and I wouldn't mind if they did so again I though that show few weeks back was a total tease.

My favorite time period for Randy Orton is September 2003-September 2004. Evolution Orton is my favorite time period for him. The other time periods I like for him are Rated RKO in 2006 and his current Viper gimmick. I just felt Orton was the best part of Monday Night RAW in 2004 and his matches on PPV and television were some of the best in his career. As good as the Viper gimmick of the present is, nothing will top Evolution Orton as far as his career goes.

He looks like Adam Evans as he faced Ricky Ortiz on ECW. Posing to the crowd, looking for an reaction.. Definetly new to the game.. Trying too hard... It's obvious.. But with years and experience, he calmed down and worked the crowd.

Or maybe creative though "Hmm...this happy go lucky face gimmick isn't working anymore. Let's turn him heel and put him in a program with Taker."

It wasn't a lack of experience or being "new to the game". It was a lack of character direction and overall purpose. Orton winning the title was immense. The booking from then on out, from jobbing to Triple H left and right to getting a girlfriend, was atrocious, hence the failed face run.

Back to the topic at hand, Orton's first halp of 2004 was amazing. He was by far the hottest talent on the roster during that period. And his matches with Foley really help put him over as legit. Foley made that guy. Shame what happened to that particular incarnation, but alas, we now have Viper Orton, and I don't think Randy's ever been hotter.

It was part of his plucky face gimmick he adapted after being dropped from Evolution and subsequently turned face. You think he was going out there flailing his arms becuas he thought it was a good idea?

Very rarely is any talent in WWE allowed to go out to the ring and "do their thing". Especialliy a young, up and coming future star like Orton. He was told to pose and smile and flail around as to get the crowd excited. It's well documented that talent nowadays are heavily micro managed and are given little to any freedom to do what they feel will get them a reaction. I highly doubt R-Truth was excited to hear he was going to be playing the same EXACT gimmick he did when he was first brought into WWE.

And to compare some no name schmuck like Adam Evans who's done absolutely nothing in mainstream wrestling to a guy like Randy Orton is absolutely ridiculous.

The botched Orton face turn helped Batista to become a main eventer much sooner than planned. Originally, it looked like the plan was for HHH vs. Orton at WM 25 but nobody liked Orton as a face and Batista was getting face pops while still being a heel.
