Simple answer is he was anointed the next Jordan by ESPN and others before he even stepped onto an NBA court and then kept over-hyping him before he had a chance to earn that title. Last year's playoff hype was horrible since ESPN and Nike kept pushing for a Lebron-Kobe Finals match-up even though the year before the NBA had their best ratings Finals of the 2000s (Celtics v Lakers).

It took Jordan until he beat the Pistons in 1990/91 to earn the title of superstar/great player and by then his NBA career was about 6-7 years.
