Apparently the umpire manual states that on a ball hit to 1st base, the first base umpire needs to be 2 to 3 feet off the line in order to make the right call. GUESS WHERE FUCKING JIM HANDLEBAR MOUSTACHE JOYCE WAS. YUP, ON THE LINE. FUCKING LAZY PIECE OF FUCKING SHIT

Kurkjian just called it the worst call in regular-season history. Absolute fucking nightmare.
And God, I wish Griffey could have stayed healthy. Can you imagine what the landscape of the game would have looked like if he - and not McGwire or Bonds - had been the one breaking records? He's a shell of his former self, but still one of the all-time greats. Such a shame his retirement is going to be overshadowed by Jim Joyce... |

We'll miss you Junior. Without question the greatest player I've ever had the pleasure to see on the field. This guy was surrounded by roiders and cheaters everywhere and they still couldn't touch him.

He could in theory overturn the ruling in the same way he was in charge of changing the rule to determine a perfect game in 1991/1992 and then a few years ago that got rid of a lot of older perfect games in MLB history (and no hitters/1-hitters).

Griffey Jr was amazing in the '90s and crazy how after the 1st year with the Reds he basically began to fall apart injury-wise. No question without a doubt that he would be the current home run champion and maybe be near the 1000 HR mark by now if it wasn't for injuries. Last edited by Emperor Smeat; 06-02-2010 at 10:31 PM. |

Aaaaand the Mets lose yet another series on the road. They haven't won back-to-back road games since last July. Unreal.
Furthermore, Santana gave the Mets 15 scoreless innings on this road trip, and the Mets lost both games. *head hit desk* |

It's pretty disgusting. I'm just as let down in MLB as I am in the call. Mistakes happen, but I can't believe there was no attempt by the other umpires to discuss it, and stall for MLB to potentially step in.
I don't care if that's something that doesn't happen. In cases like these, in this day and age, it should. |

It's not like NBA refs are any better, or NFL refs through history. At least there has been instant replay instituted there, though.
It should exist in cases like this. If the game has serious consquences, or historical significance, replay should be allowed. |

The problem with any potential reversed decision is that it will then lead to people calling for reversals all the time.
Ugh. They should have done something to get it right before that fucking game ended. It's called extenuating circumstances. |

I dunno guys, I agree it sucks but I think everyone's overreacting a bit. Calling for an overhaul of a sport's rules because some kid's stats got hurt is a little strong.

Why are you always trying to be the contrarian of the board? You're wrong. Hate to break it to you. It's a huge deal. It's only happend 20 times in 130 years. And almost every pitcher thats done it has been considered the best of the best as far as pitching goes. And if i was a fan at the game, i'd be devestated that i was robbed of a chance of seeing a perfect game live.

Yeah, some sort of challenge system for non-HR calls has to be put in place. It really won't take all that long if it needed to be used.
Can't challenge balls and strikes. But you CAN challenge safe/out, catch/trap, etc. Each manager gets one challenge, and if they get it right they get an additional challenge until they get one wrong. Simple...and if the umps make THAT many bad calls in one game that all those reviews are needed, it'll be a red flag to the league that those umps suck. I'm sick of old-timers defending the "human element" when the amount of bad calls has never been worse. Mind, as retarded as the Jim Joyce call was...I do feel bad that his reputation is now tarnished and he may end up receiving death threats. But a challenge system will not only prevent this, but also keep fat fucks like Joe West from taking the game into their own hands and trying to stir shit up just to make a name for himself and try to sell his shitty country album. |

Furthermore, I have SOME optimism that the call could still get reversed. If it were anything other than out #27, I'd say no. But it was the last out of the game. The game ended there and that last AB didn't happen, simple.

Andres was pretty ok with it. Loved his attitude right after and then again in the interview. Selig should step in and make a favourable ruling. It would be a great move on his part imo.

I want instant replay. I want something like the NFL challenge system in MLB. But all these people calling for instant replay now when they weren't calling for it before are overreacting and way off base. If umps costing a team a win isn't a good enough reason to install instant replay, then an ump costing a kid a perfect game isn't a good enough reason either. |

Selig is consulting with his advisors to decide if the call should be overturned.
Tony La Russa, who is on the advisory board, has already said it should be overturned. I think it will happen. It was going to be the game-ending play anyway. Why not give him the perfect game that he deserves and at least clear Jim Joyce's name? I'll lose what little respect I had for Selig if he doesn't reverse the call. I mean, if Fay Vincent can get rid of 50 or so no-nos, Selig can give the guy a perfect game when he clearly had it. |

If he does it he's doing it for Joyce. The best part of throwing a perfect game is the last out and the celebration. That's gone forever.

A perfect game is more than just stats though. It's not about his WHIP or ERA. It's about achieving a baseball milestone, that fans care a lot about. It's the same as other major accomplishments and records, which are more valued among the baseball community and fans than any other sport, arguably.
I agree there are lines. They can't go and reverse the decision after the game has ended, because that opens up the flood gates. I do think that there should have been something more done before they continued with the game, after such a glaring error that so many people cared and would continue to care about. I also think that it should serve as just another eye-opener to making potential changes, though. It's nothing I didn't feel already after some horrible calls in the past few years, including last post season. |

Braves v. Dodgers is gonna be a good series. This road trip is probably going to be brutal for the Braves. They will have played something like 14 more games on the road than at home after this stretch, and they have one of the best home records in baseball.

I don't think reversing this call would open the flood gates. It's such a special situation that will more than likely never happen again.
If it were anything other than the last out, it can't be changed. If the Indians had gotten another hit or walk or something AFTER the blown call, it can't be changed. The way it worked out is like the only way I could see it being overturned without opening any flood gates. |

I would attribute a lot of the Braves' success to having one of the best benches in baseball as well. David Ross and Omar Infante could start for a lot of baseball teams (and probably will once their contracts expire). |
