yeah but not as many people knew where to find the spoilers back then

Exactly.

Also, I think it's a matter of WWE being "comfortable" and knowing they have no competition...cause when Smackdown first began, it was live...but then again, WCW was still around, with "Thunder" on TBS on Thursdays, so WWE felt obligated to go live because of competition. WWE eventually as we all know bought WCW, and a little bit later on, started taping Smackdown.

Also, I don't recall Smackdown ever being taped live regularly, only every now and again or on special occasions. And I doubt Vince felt obligated to do anything that WCW was doing in 1999.

SmackDown has never been consistently live.
