Would Rey Mysterio have been World Heavyweight Champion if Eddie didn't die?
Although not your typical size and look to become a main event champion, guys like Yokozuna and Rey Mysterio became champions thanks to perfect timing

How far would've Rey gone if Eddie was still alive? Would've he become World Heavyweight Champion anyways? Like maybe a little later (say in 2007 instead of 2005)

They were building him up for a year and he was rumored to face Batista and Eddie Guerrero in a triple threat match for the belt at Wrestlemania 22. He also revealed in a book or something that the WWE officials had already told him (around February that year) that he was going to win the Heavyweight title at Mania.

Yes, I truly believe he would have. He might not have been the first choice to win the Royal Rumble, but I believe that he would have wound up with the belt eventually. He had gone over Eddie Guerrero at WrestleMania 21, and had been involved in a huge feud with him, and Eddie (by accounts) was about to win the World Heavyweight Championship. Rey Mysterio was in the upper-crust at the time.

I still think the "tribute" main event they should have gone with at WrestleMania 22 should have been Kurt Angle defending the World Heavyweight Title against Chris Benoit. Angle and Benoit were arguably the best two ring guys the WWE had at the time, and Benoit was close to Eddie, had credibility, and hadn't had a blood feud with the guy in the months prior to his passing.

I don't think his merch sales would have trumped Vince's hatred of little people being pushed. I don't see Rey ever becoming the World Champion had Eddie not tragically died and then put into the Hall of Fame the night before.

Definitely could have seen a nice Eddie VS. Rey feud...and that means that the Chavo VS. Rey feud would not have happened and also that Vickie would never have been on TV...

Well Lesnar and Goldberg left,and Smackdown was weak on the main event talet side of things at the time...so yea he still would have won it,especially if they still went to pg.But if Eddie hadn't died who knows?Benoit may have not had a breakdown and killed people.So we could have had a Benoit/Eddie feud,or perhaps a triple threat with Rey.

WCW by far.

On paper, his WWE run wasn't bad either. It was different in it's own way. He did go over Rock, Triple H (and Evolution)

The WCW style push he got wouldn't fit the WWE style of things. Different time, different place. Plus there was the fact that Jericho made him his bitch backstage, and he tripped and slipped when he did his SummerSlam 2003 entrance. I didn't mind him in WWE, but he wasn't nearly as over as he was in WCW.

It's like comparing the DX of 1997 to the DX of 2006

He would have ended up as a champion a few years later since the crowd loves him as a wrestler and Smackdown usually has the period after each draft where the main event lacks enough talent.

The only thing that really hurt his reign was WWE always making it appear the only reason he won the title was due to Eddie dying and being his friend when Benoit and others were much closer to Eddie. If anything, Chavo could have gotten the sympathy reign or push to the title since he was an actual family member of Eddie.

I can't help but think this was part of the resentment towards Rey's initial push. I can personally remember hating that Rey dedicated the Royal Rumble to Eddie Guerrero, but yet Eddie's own nephew didn't. He got a spot, but was soundly eliminated by Triple H. Psicosis and Juventud were both really close with Eddie, too, but they didn't get any sort of push. It was all Rey. It just made it seem like a means to an end, and using Eddie's passing as a means just felt wrong. The backlash at WrestleMania was quite strong, and started Rey Mysterio's run off badly.

To be fair, the booking of Rey post-Rumble win was atrocious. Putting his title shot up, losing it, and then being given a spot back for the hell of it? Made Rey look dumb, easily goaded and weak. Yeah, the WWE was always high on Randy Orton, but even with the change of plans, they should have just went with Kurt Angle vs. Rey Mysterio -- who had proven to have amazing chemistry in the past.

Pushing Chavo Guerrero would have been emotionally appropriate, but perhaps not much else. I'm a HUGE supporter of Chavo, and was upset he didn't get much by means of a push when one was handed out to Rey; but Chavo's never been the first choice of a draw (although the booing for Rey did quieten when Chavo and Vickie appeared on the stage). Especially over Rey who moved merchandise. That's why I believed at the time Benoit should have won the 2006 Rumble. Yeah, he went crazy and did some horrible shit, but at the time he was one of the best workers the WWE had, and just two years previous had headlined a WrestleMania and won the World Heavyweight Title on the WWE's premier brand in Madison Square Garden.

The poetry of Angle vs. Benoit, with Benoit winning the same belt he won two years prior, and celebrated as confetti came down, beating the guy Eddie Guerrero defended the WWE Title successfully against at the same prior event -- with him noticeable missing from the heartwarming celebration they had after Benoit had won that year -- would have been amazing, and a great quiet tribute to Eddie Guerrero.

And again, alternatively, prior to the Rumble there was an injury to whoever the World Heavyweight Champion was, and Kurt Angle was brought over to SmackDown! to win a Battle Royal because his "RAW contract expired." That year, Angle faced Mark Henry in a random title match at the event (which actually closed the show, which was another way of making Rey's push look a bit silly). At the time, a lot of people were suggesting that they just put up the World Heavyweight Title in the Royal Rumble, as something different.

So I would have gone with both Benoit and Angle over Rey Mysterio as potential Royal Rumble winners in 2006, and Chavo Guerrero would have made more sense emotionally than Rey, too -- even if he was never going to be the merchandise mover Rey was and is.

If you look all the way back to WCW in 1999, when Mysterio faced Ric Flair for the WCW World Title on a episode of Nitro, you could tell that there was an actual, reasonable logic behind putting the biggest belt on your smallest guy. Fast forward several years to a place where he is no longer JUST a cruiserweight, where he's been given more of a spotlight as a superstar and has had amazing matches (some of which he won) against guys like Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit and of course, Eddie.

I think that he was destined to be the World Champion some day, whether Eddie died or not. I just believe that it would've probably been in a storyline involving Eddie in some way, and I also think that Rey's push to the belt was extremely poorly handled. Worst "underdog push" ever, as it made Rey look like a joke, and his subsequent title run was even worse.
