Hulk Hogan was the fucking man up until somewhere around Wrestlemania 9. He was the right man for the job, and nobody could have done better (though some may have done it just as well.) In the ensuing time, Hogan was little more than an obstacle to good programming and talent advancement. If he deserves credit for anything after that point, then it can very well be said that his going to WCW did provide a spike in popularity and revenue that many others benefited from. He does not deserve credit for getting the nWo over; while his turn was an excellent bit of booking at the time, the angle was just as over before his involvement, and after joining the group Hogan did little but sandbag the stable by making it about him instead of the group and then having Bischoff start the parade of old men to oppose him. And then he fucked up the payoff of his Starrcade match with Sting. After joining WCW he was entirely in business for himself and ensured that any time he was around, that everything was about him. I don't want to hear about anyone he put over late in WCW or early in his WWE return; all he was doing at that point was bankrolling points to ensure he could continue to do nothing but push himself afterwards. That being aside, his personal life has been pathetic to disgusting; trying to buy his daughter a career was laughable, and his public treatment of his son's friend-crippling car accident was deplorable. I will never deny the man's contributions to wrestling in the early years of the WWF, but the man has become a faded shadow of the man he was, a man who isn't even fit to do commercials for furniture rental companies. Oh, wait, he DOES do commercials for furniture rental companies. Because he's a dumbass and his ex-wife so thoroughly cleaned him out that he needs the money and, let's face it, never had any shame to begin with. |
