smackdown spoilers 3/25
Dark Match:
* Trent Baretta defeated Curt Hawkins

WWE Smackdown (Airing Friday)

Rey Mysterio defeated C.M. Punk by DQ. This was a WrestleMania Rewind match. Cody Rhodes came out, showed a knee brace on his right knee, and gave Mysterio a knee to the face.

There was a backstage segment with Teddy Long issuing the ruling that Edge and Alberto Del Rio can't touch each other before WrestleMania 27. Christian told Edge not come out when he faces Del Rio.

Undertaker will address Triple H tonight.

Edge defeated Drew McIntyre. Edge won via submission with a move that resembled a reverse Sharpshooter. Edge speared McIntyre after the match.

Lay-Cool defeated Rosa Mendez & Kelly Kelly. Layla has the Snooki hair do and they were both fist pumping they are also not even wearing their ring gear. Rosa and Kelly go straight for the attack. Quick match ending when Layla hits a reverse neck breaker for the win. After the match Laycool cut a quick promo saying that their opponents for Wrestlemania are no challenge.

Wade Barrett defeated Kofi Kingston to win the Intercontinental Championship. Kofi was going for trouble in paradise but ref got distracted. He connected trouble on heath allowing Wade to hit wasteland following a pinfall. After the match Justin hit a 450 splash.

Teddy Long told Del Rio the same thing he told Edge about no physical contact between the two before WrestleMania or the instigator is out of the title match. Del Rio smiled and then winked at Long.

Undertaker came out for a promo. He said the words "Die Trying" will be the epitaph on Triple H's tombstone. He said Triple H will be No. 19 at WrestleMania.

Jack Swagger beat R-Truth. Swagger won with the ankle lock in three minutes. Swagger and Cole took a victory lap after the match, which was funny.

Christian (w/Edge) defeated Alberto Del Rio (w/Ricardo Rodriguez, Brodus Clay). Del Rio delivered some nasty leg kicks early on. He got in Edge's face and encouraged him to smack him. Christian had the match won, but Ricardo put Del Rio's leg on the ropes. Christian came back and won with the Killswitch. Edge teased hitting Del Rio with a chair, but Christian hit Del Rio with the chair instead.

Very interested to see what a "reverse sharpshooter" looks like, I can't imagine how that can be a submission.

To think Kofi had just given an interview about how proud it was to go into WM as the IC champ. What made Wade the no. 1 contender anyway? Getting a Lara Emily-ish vibe here.

Wade FUCKIN' Barrett I'm awaiting the flood of complaints that Wade is getting demoted to IC title status to flood the thread. Kolfi is not on the Mania card, so this gives him a reason to be inserted into a Corre vs. Show/Kane/whomever match, and it gives Wade a belt to work with.

The Codey Rhodes/Mysterio segment sounds good, and Cody continues to recieve a great build going into Mania.

Christian with yet another win. I'm doubting more and more that he will get inserted into the title match at Mania. Would WWE really force feed him into the main event 2 days before Mania. Having him go over Del Rio in back to back weeks does two things, IMO; builds steam for Edge going into Mania, since Del Rio looks beatable, only for Del Rio to go over and win the title, and sets up a lovely Christian main event run in the future, even if it means jobbing to Del Rio.

Hey I have an idea. Let's have HHH and Undertaker come out for a couple weeks and address one another then not appear on Raw at all for one week then have them come out and address one another some more. HIGH FIVE!

I guess being an inevitable interference/run-in for the WHC match is a bigger thing for Christian as opposed to a random undercard slot with no story (maybe not paycheck wise, but who knows).

I would obviously rather a triple threat match, but the involvement of Christian for Edge and Clay for Del Rio has really helped the build for this one-on-one match.

At first but at least they were in the same ring for most of it but with HHH/Taker they cut Taker coming out on Smackdown for what reason? The first promo was great. They both came back and said nothing, although I think it would have been better if they did it at the end of Raw. Maybe they could have had a tag team match with Taker/HHH vs Kane/Sheamus. Sheamus and Kane weren't doing anything at the time and it could have settled unfinished feuds. If they are keeping both Taker and HHH from wrestling at all until WM I understand but they could at least have some live interaction between them.

I would not have mind a triple threat match, but with Del Rio winning the Rumble, and not losing his title shot (ala rey and Cena), it would feel pretty forced.

I think the fact that he's as involved in this story as he has been is a good sign, and is probably the highest profile feud his character has been, sans the triple threat with Cena and Jericho in 2005.

Why they continue to have superstars from one brand appear on another show week after week will never cease to amaze me. What's the point of a brand split? Yes, I know this week is supposed to be WrestleMania Rewind, but honestly, the idea is lame. Is anybody really expecting CM Punk vs. Rey Mysterio to be anywhere near as good as their encounter at WrestleMania last year?

They should use RAW superstars on RAW and SmackDown superstars on SmackDown. That simple. They could've easily done Chavo vs. Mysterio just to get Chavo on the show. It's not like they're building Orton/Punk on SmackDown. Punk appearing on SmackDown does nothing but take away a SmackDown guy's potential appearance on the show. Same goes for Mysterio appearing on RAW.

Well if the IC title is going to just be a prop (both IC and US titles are glorified entrance gear these days) it's awesome to have it on a guy who is actually going to be on TV each week like Barrett (maybe by holding it he can bring a little prestige back to it) plus hey it wasn't a Corre vs Show or Kane or both DQ finish. Weird thing is they still haven't actually said Corre or SHow/Kane are going to be at Mania, at this rate it's gonna end up being the dark match before the show

It's interesting how Sheamus and Barrett are in such a similar spot right now.

Both were likely slated to face the top veterans in the company. Then those veterans were hot-shot into a match against eachother, and the rookies were left without a plan.
Now they're both holding the midcard titles.

I actually think it's good for the midcard titles. I'd like to see one or both of them run with the belts and feud with some top talent during said run. I fully expect both of them to return to form after Wrestlemania ends and the Taker/HHH side-track is over.

I actually wouldn't mind it if they did Wade Barrett, Justin Gabriel & Heath Slater vs. Kofi Kingston, Big Show & Kane at WrestleMania. Leave Ezekiel Jackson as the wild card at ringside. Maybe start having him carry around the defunct ECW Championship.

Sounds like a pretty good show. CM Punk vs. Rey Mysterio will be a good match. Personally, I would have gone with Cody Rhodes distracting Mysterio, allowing Punk to get the victory. I think Punk could use some momentum heading into Mania, and Rey wouldn't be hurt by wanting more reasons to get at Cody Rhodes.

Edge and Drew McIntyre work well together. I would have had the wily Alberto Del Rio send Brodus Clay down to beat-down Edge, causing the disqualification, only for McIntyre to act conflicted as to whether or not to help Edge -- eventually just deciding to walk to the back.

Building up LayCool is both standard and redundant at this point. It doesn't hurt them, but beating Kelly Kelly & Rosa Mendes isn't really going to help them. But I enjoy seeing Layla and Rosa.

Wade Barrett vs. Kofi Kingston will at least be a good match, and I like that Barrett got a mid-card title en route to a permanent main event spot. Good for him. As I said, I hope this leads to Barrett, Gabriel & Slater vs. Kingston, Show & Kane.

Jack Swagger being built up is not only good for the Michael Cole vs. Jerry Lawler match, but good for Swagger as well. He's going over pretty upper-crust guys with ease, and it seems like Swagger will have a spot in the main event post-Mania. I hope.

Christian going over Alberto Del Rio again is pretty immense. I'm thinking that he will be added to the WrestleMania World Heavyweight Title Match, but they may not even announce it until the show. I mean, there are no episodes of SmackDown! left and the only place to do this is on RAW -- but why wait to do it on RAW? I guess we might get Ezekiel Jackson and Christian added to the Corre vs. faces match, too -- with Christian adding some more gravity to the match given his recent push.

Yeah, I find it weird that you say that after calling them "just a prop." It'd be just that -- a prop to get Ezekiel Jackson over. A symbol of his dominance over ECW, and his influence at the same time that Wade Barrett was introducing himself to the WWE world.

I said the WWE are basically using the midcard titles as glorified props, not that I liked the idea. Hency why I said if they are going to mistreat the titles that way might as well put them on guys like Barrett who at least are on TV every week.

Jackson carrying around a defunct title of a brand that was canceled because no one was watching it isn't going to do shit for him and just seems utterly random and pointless, hell it doesn't even work as a symbol of dominance he won the damn thing on the last show ever, he never actually defended it or had any sort of reign, it's basically like someone becoming Champion of the Titanic. I mean it might have worked if say Jackson had been carrying the thing with him since ECW folded but to just start wearing it now does absolutely nothing.


Oh and to address Hasney's point there's a big difference between Rhyno being the last champion of the independent, cult followed, Paul Heyman run ECW and being the last champion of ECWE aka Superstars with storylines.

People remember and care about Paul Heyman's ECW no one gives a shit about Vince McMahon's ECW

I disagree with you, Lara Emily. I think the selling of Jackson being the last ECW Champion and the visual of all four members of The Corre holding titles would resonate with fans.

Then give Jackson a real title. I'm pissed that Kane is a face again. I've been meaning to post this for a couple of weeks, but once again booking the Kane character has become a joke.

So after years of constant face/heel turns, last year Kane was in the push of his life. He became a monster again and started destroying people, trying to find who attacked the Undertaker. Then it was revealed to be Kane, who had been plotting and planning for many, many years. He cut some monster badass promos, had a nice title run and started to become the Kane we all knew and loved from ten years ago.

And then he's a face again. All sins forgiven. Attacking people left, right and centre ignored. 'Taking out' the Undertaker forgotten.

Fuck this. I am officially done with Kane. :foc:

Besides that, good Smackdown. Look forward to seeing Barrett with some gold, even if it isn't the World title.

And it certainly looks like Edge/Del Rio won't be the main event of Wrestlemania, especially if Christian is in it too. I don't see them changing the match format of THE main event a week before the PPV. But I hope they announce next week that it's a triple threat match.

I still disagree. Ezekiel Jackson was the last-ever ECW Champion -- the man who defeated Christian, who could now be a WrestleMania main eventer. The ECW Title would be a symbol. I think it'd be better than giving him the US Title, because that fucks around with the brand split and derails other plans.
