Guys scores 30-35 points a year, stirs up trouble, is a good penalty killer and is physical. Why wouldn't I want a player like that. For the record, I'd take Sean Avery as well.

Avery is an asshole, but he is just that.

Cooke is a piece of shit who I would love nothing more then to see him break his neck after Savard nails him headfirst into the boards.

Also, stirring up trouble is not the same as ending someones career or blatantly elbowing someone in the head.

Of course Toronto fans would love something like that, it would provide entertainment in place of their utter shit team.

If Cooke could be kinda pointed in the right direction he's very usefull.

I've never considered Avery dirty, but he's an ass. I would though love him in Toronto. He' excellent at throwing teams off his game.

Cooke isn't crappy he's just nuts, he's an amazing penalty killer and can chip in some goals to boot.

The Vancouver Canucks version of Cooke was really good. Finished his checks cleanly, penalty killed, scored some goals. There's a reason why he's getting paid what he does. The Pens organization seems to criticize everything else in the NHL but just throws Cooke back out there without consequence. Maybe the team needs to be more strict with Cooke because he was rarely an issue in Vancouver.

Manny Malholtra gone for the season and playoffs. HUGE loss for the Canucks. Manny is one of the best faceoff men in the NHL and an excellent penalty killer.

I'm both pissed (being a pens fan) and pleased, it's he right length but, no one else (even another repeat offender) would get that kinda of punishment so it kinda pisses me off.

I wish Cooke's suspension was a sign of things to come for the league but the fact is only Matt Cooke will get those suspensions

It might have been a combination of his previous history and the string of bad hits the last week or two leading to the NHL having an emergency meeting to reconsider adding more hits to the head as illegal. Cooke's biggest problem was this recent suspension came almost right after he finished serving another suspension so the NHL probably felt he didn't learn and gave him a harsher one.

With Avery, he was pissing off a lot of goalies and after a while the NHL stepped in to add the rule against "harassing" goalies while also hinting to Avery of if does it again there will be game suspensions.

I love how the NHL is "cracking down" on headshots, when what Cooke did to McDonaugh was an elbow to the head and has never been legal. It wasn't even a check. If it were a shoulder to the head I probably wouldn't have cared since last time I checked hitting was legal, but Cooke was just being a dick and stuck his elbow out. Next time he' gonna get half a year if he's lucky.

NHL is changing. It will begin to protect it's players. So far it seems random in the way they suspend or don't, but it is moving toward protecting careers.

Mario has to release Cooke. He's gone on record for stating his issues with the league, so now he'll have to step up and eat Cooke's contract. If he doesn't he comes off as a hypocrite.

The Pens should NOT get rid of Cooke. Does he need to tone it down? Absolutely. But in an age where every team has a goon, you can't be the only one without one if you want to compete. The fact that the NHL met last week and decided to do NOTHING about headshots proves that they are fucking neanderthals with the mentality of "U gotta be tuff to play 'ockey." The only possible way this will change is for someone to die on the ice from a shot to the head.

And it's complete and utter BS that Cooke gets 14-17 games when others are getting 0-2 for the EXACT same hit.

Smelly, if you think that they read the riot act to Cooke because the hit came so soon after his last suspension, you obviously learned nothing from Trevor Gillies. He was back less than 2 MINUTES from a prior suspension before doing something deserving of another suspension yet only got 1 game more than the previous.


I personally can't wait for the day that Colin Campbell gets removed from his position as the sole person responsible for handing out fines and suspensions. Yes, he isn't directly responsible for any discipline regarding the Bruins because his son plays for them, but the NHL front office "takes care of its own".

You hit the nail on the head. When Cooke was a Canuck, he was nicknamed "Cookie" He was an Esa Tikkanen/Claude Lemieux type player. He was well liked by the fans (although there are conflicting ideas on how much he was liked in the dressing room, due to his unwillingness to drop the glove after he started shit) He got in the face of the opposition, and was fun to watch. I don't remember any dirty or cheap plays out of him.

Then Alexandre Burrows came along and made Matt Cooke completely redundant. When Burrows first started, he was a 3rd line agitator...much like Cooke is...but also much better. So Cooke was shipped off.

For what it's worth...Cooke is still active in the Vancouver area. He runs some sort of foundation...I don't remember the details, all I remember is that he's more than just a hockey player...

He's gone downhill since. He didn't play long enough for the Caps to place any blame on them. He didn't turn into a douche bag until he joined the Pens.

So who's fault is it?

Cooke's fault.

And now he's paying the price...and a well deserved price at that.

But the Canucks are still a great team capable of competing for the cup...

Manny would have been the Leafs #1 center.

Kesler and Henrik can pick up the slack, plus getting Higgins from Florida at the deadline means the Canucks can deal with this injury.

Cooke got exactly what he deserved, when have I said the penalty is wrong. Oh wait I haven't. Once again the number is right the reason is wrong.


But let's talk Trevor Gilles then, only 9 and 10 game suspensions and those were in back to back games (and Gilles is a guy who has zero redeeming qualities, Cooke is at least a competent hockey player when he's not losing his mind). Again I'm saying this is the right decision but I'm also saying the NHL needs to be consistent and punish everyone severely. This was an easy one for the NHL, Cooke is public enemy #1, look at Heatley worse hit way more premeditation 2 games, Marchand similar hit 2 games, Chara breaks a guy's neck almost no games (and before anyone says not the same thing, it was interference and thus an illegal hit) Let's start setting the precedent high for these hits regardless who is doing them. It should be 5-10 games for this kind of thing plus more if you are a repeat guy like Cooke. Instead what we have is 2 games for the hit and upwards of 15 games for being Matt Cooke
